Texas pushes weekend run differential to 38-2 in 15 innings
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Texas Longhorn softball bats continued to keep the student-athletes warm as UT totaled 15 runs on 16 hits in five offensive innings en route to earning a 15-1 victory over Kent State on Sunday afternoon.
Staying true to the game plan for the weekend, Texas scored three runs in the top of the first inning against the Golden Flash to push its weekend total to 14 first inning runs across three games. The Longhorns followed that frame up with a seven-run top of the second to make it 14 second inning runs throughout the weekend as well.
By the time Ashton Maloney, the Longhorns' leadoff batter, stepped to plate to begin the top of the third, Texas had already run out to a 10-0 lead and the Missouri native was about to have her third trip to the dish in as many innings. And it didn't take long for Maloney to score her third run in as many innings as well as the Missouri native touched home plate on a Mia Scott double moments later. The hit was the first of three run-scoring doubles in the inning as Reese Atwood and Leighann Goode went on to do so later in the frame.
Kent State answered Texas' two fourth inning runs with a single run in the bottom of the fourth, but the already established 15-run lead was too much for the Golden Flash.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"It was a solid performance all the way around today. Teagan Kavan pitched really well and Sophia (Simpson) was able to come in and had a good inning, before Cam(bria Salmon) came in and closed it out. I think the hitting was really good. With Ashton Maloney at the top of the lineup, she's doing a phenomenal job, along with Mia Scott as well. And then Reese (Atwood) just missed hitting for the cycle with a single during her last at bat. Overall, it was a good day and just building towards tomorrow with two really good games."
FROM REDSHIRT-JUNIOR ASHTON MALONEY
"Everyone is pretty relaxed right now. We are just having fun out there. I feel like, in the past, we've been playing tight in close games, so this weekend, we've just really been playing free and relaxed and that's been helpful. For me, personally, I'm just trying to get a good pitch to hit and trying to not be too complicated and just simplify things, because that's my game."
