Reese Atwood hits walk-off grand slam to cap Longhorns’ seven-run rally on Thursday.
AUSTIN, Texas – As if Reese Atwood's name wasn't already etched throughout Texas' softball record book prior to Thursday afternoon, the junior catcher added another addition by becoming the first student-athlete in program history with a game-ending grand slam to cap the Longhorns' 7-3 win over No. 9/9 LSU.
Despite Texas scoring four in the bottom of the seventh, the rally actually began in the sixth, when the Longhorns were trailing LSU, 3-0.
After LSU was issued a team warning by the SEC umpire crew following a leadoff single to start the top of the sixth, Teagan Kavan (19-3) worked around a second consecutive single with three straight flyouts to Katie Stewart in left field. With momentum shifting towards the home dugout, the top of the Longhorn lineup was due up.
Kayden Henry began the frame by drawing a six-pitch walk, before coming around to score two pitches later when Mia Scott sent a 1-0 pitch over the 10-foot wall in center field. Moments later, Joley Mitchell, who was shoved to the ground in the top half of the inning that resulted in the Tigers' warning, tied the game, 3-3, when she sent a 1-1 pitch to nearly the same spot as Scott did.
Kavan kept the LSU offense out of the run column in the top of the seventh to give her offense an opportunity to record its second walk-off plate appearance against a SEC team this season.
Leighann Goode opened the frame with a ground out to shortstop before Kaydee Bennett was able to reach on a throwing error. She worked her way to second on a two-out, infield single off the bat of Henry. Both advanced a base after Scott drew a two-out, five-pitch walk to load the bases for Reese Atwood.
Atwood, like she did three times as a freshman in 2023, delivered the knockout punch by sending the first pitch of her at bat 284 feet and off the graduate student housing complex across the street from McCombs Field. It was Atwood's first walk-off hit since hitting a three-run home run off former Oklahoma State pitcher Kelly Maxwell on April 22, 2023.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"I mean, you just keep waiting for (Reese Atwood) for bust out and get a pitch she can drive. Tonight, she got something left up that she could get a good piece of wood on. She was just ready for that pitch."
FROM JUNIOR CATCHER REESE ATWOOD
"I was just going up there and looking for a ball over the plate and I thought that was one. I've always been one to not be afraid to swing at the first pitch. I feel it always just comes down to that."
GAME NOTES
- Thursday afternoon's win gives seventh-year Texas softball head coach Mike White his 300th career win on the Forty Acres, joining Connie Clark (1997-2018) as the only Longhorn head coaches to reach the milestone.
- With her two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, Mia Scott became one of just four student-athletes to drive in 170-or-more career runs.
- Scott will enter Friday's contest with 171 career RBI, tied with Mary Iakopo (2019-22) for third on the program's career RBI list.
- Reese Atwood's game-ending grand slam was the first for the third-year Longhorn since Feb. 24, 2024, when she connected for one against Colorado State.

- The 2013 team hit eight grand slams throughout its season.
- With the win, Texas has now taken the last seven consecutive games against LSU played in Austin, Texas.
- The Longhorns will enter Friday afternoon's game with a 7-1 all-time record against the Tigers on the Forty Acres.
