Texas unable to rally from five-run, seventh-inning deficit.
AUSTIN, Texas – After Texas brought the energy over the final two innings of Thursday afternoon's game, the ninth-ranked LSU Tigers responded with a pair of runs during the first three innings of Friday's contest en route to earning a 6-1 victory over the third-ranked Longhorns.
After inducing a flyout to Kayden Henry in left field on the fifth pitch of the game, Mac Morgan (7-3) surrendered three consecutive hits with Maci Bergeron pushes LSU, 1-0, on a bloop single to left field. McKenzie Redoutey doubled the Tiger lead four pitches later on a grounder to second base.
The Texas offense appeared in prime position to not only tie the game but take the lead in the bottom of the second.
After fouling off three consecutive pitches with a 2-2 count, Joley Mitchell doubled to the left-centerfield gap, before coming around to score on a Katie Stewart double four pitches later. Stewart moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Cimusz. Victoria Hunter continued to build on the momentum by drawing a walk on five pitches, but she was involved in an inning-ending double play after Kaydee Bennett popped up to Avery Hodge at shortstop.
LSU used its newly found momentum to expand its lead out to 4-1 following a two spot in the top of the third.
Similar to the second, Texas opened the fourth with its first two batters successfully reaching base, but neither Reese Atwood nor Mitchell was able to come around to score. The sixth inning provided another opportunity for the Longhorns to potentially tie the game as Mitchell, Stewart and Cimusz all reached base with two outs, but Vanessa Quiroga, in a pinch-hitting opportunity, grounded out on the second pitch she saw to end the frame.
Following a two-run seventh that saw the Tigers push out their lead to 6-1, Texas, again, had its first two batters of the frame reach base, but neither Bennett nor Ashton Maloney was able to touch home plate with the heart of the Longhorn lineup at the plate.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"I think 6-7-8-9 in our lineup has just been struggling a little bit right now and it's tough to go through a season without a little adversity. But today was just about seeing if we could wake the lineup up a little bit by making some changes and do some things. I liked the way Vanessa Quiroga came in and make solid contact with the bases loaded."
