Three Longhorns combine to limit Aggies to one unearned run
AUSTIN, Texas — Behind a strong start from right-hander Ruger Riojas, No. 1 Texas took the series opener over Texas A&M, 2-1, in front of 7,942 fans Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Riojas (8-1) tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings, leading the Longhorns (35-5, 17-2) to their seventh straight victory. The junior held the Aggies (24-17, 8-11 SEC) to just five hits and struck out three.
Relievers Max Grubbs and Dylan Volantis combined to limit the visitors to one unearned run on three hits across the final 4 1/3 frames.
Volantis (10) locked down the save, recording the final five outs all via the strikeout.
As a pitching staff, Texas totaled 10 punchouts, while issuing only one walk.
Right fielder Tommy Farmer IV's first career home run in the seventh proved to be the difference after Texas A&M pushed across a tally one frame later.
Farmer IV deposited a first-pitch change-up into the Aggies' bullpen, bringing the sixth-largest regular-season crowd ever at UFCU Disch-Falk Field to their feet.
Meanwhile, second baseman Jayden Duplantier broke the early stalemate with a run-scoring double in the third. Duplantier's extra-base hit was just his fourth RBI of the year.
Friday's affair marked the first conference battle between the in-state rivals since 2012.
The Longhorns will look to secure their seventh straight SEC series Saturday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
