Longhorns overcame pair of deficits, put tying-run in scoring position in ninth.
NORMAN, Okla. — Down to its final two outs, No. 3 Texas loaded the bases, but its ninth-inning rally came up short to Oklahoma, 8-6, on Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Infielders Jalin Flores and Adrian Rodriguez tallied back-to-back base hits to put pressure on the Sooners (33-18, 14-15 SEC).
Sophomore Jaquae Stewart beat out a potential game-ending double play to extend the contest for the Longhorns (41-11, 21-8 SEC) before freshman Cole Chamberlain was hit by a pitch to push the tying-run into scoring position.
Despite tossing 31 pitches in the frame, Oklahoma closer Dylan Crooks (13) was able to induce a fly out to even the series.
Right-hander Reid Hensley (4-1) logged the win, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless in relief.
Meanwhile, Texas righty Max Grubbs (6-1) was charged with the loss. Grubbs struck out four of the first five batters he faced, but the Sooners punched back with three runs in the eighth.
Texas overcame a pair of early deficits, including a 5-1 hole.
After the Sooners extended their lead to four through as many frames, the Longhorns batted around to put up a five-spot in the fifth.
The Longhorns strung together four hits, highlighted by Flores' game-tying triple and Rodriguez's go-ahead single.
In the defeat, left-hander Ethan Walker totaled a season-best two shutout innings and three strikeouts.
Texas — which became the first team to win the SEC in its first season since the league's inaugural campaign in 1933 — closes out its regular season slate on Saturday. The series finale is scheduled for 2 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
