No. 4 Men’s Golf tied for fifth after third round at NCAA Championship

Gilbert fires an even-par 72 on Sunday to pace the Longhorns.
CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 5-over-par 293 on Sunday to rest in a tie for fifth place after the third round of the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa. Sophomore Jack Gilbert paced the Longhorns on day three with an even-par 72.
In addition to Gilbert's performance, Texas also counted scores in the third round from freshman Daniel Bennett (1-over 73), junior Luke Potter (2-over 74) and junior Tommy Morrison (2-over 74).
The field was cut to the top 15 teams and the top nine individuals on non-advancing teams following Sunday's third round. The fourth and final round of stroke play is set for Monday, May 26, and the individual NCAA champion will be crowned following the completion of 72 holes of stroke play.
No. 1 Auburn holds a four-stroke lead in the team standings after 54 holes with a three-round score of 10-under 854 (286-282-286). No. 5 Arizona State is second at 6-under 858 (286-277-295), followed by No. 6 Oklahoma in third at 3-under 861 (280-286-295) and No. 7 Florida in fourth at 1-under 863 (285-286-292).
The Longhorns (285-291-293) are tied for fifth with No. 2 Oklahoma State (293-285-291) at 5-over 869. Texas is currently seven strokes ahead of the cut line for ninth place (Texas Tech, Ole Miss and Texas A&M are tied for eighth at 12-over 876). The top eight teams following Monday's final round of stroke play will advance to the NCAA Match Play Championships.
Michael La Sasso of Ole Miss holds the individual lead after the first three round with a 54-hole total of 11-under 205 (68-67-70). Texas A&M's Phichaksn Maichon is second at 9-under 207 (66-73-68).
In Monday's fourth round, the Longhorns will be paired with Florida and Oklahoma State, and tee times will begin at 1:25 p.m. CT (11:25 a.m. PT) from hole 1.
Match Play quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Tuesday, May 27, while the NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert fired an even-par 72 in the third round and climbed 11 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 22nd with a 54-hole score of 1-over 217 (72-73-72). Starting on hole 10, Gilbert recorded four birdies (holes 10, 15, 18 and 2) on Sunday.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett carded a 1-over 73 on Sunday and is tied for 36th at 3-over 219 (75-71-73). Starting on hole 10, Bennett tallied four birdies (holes 15, 18, 1 and 4) during his third round.
- Junior Luke Potter posted a 2-over 74 in his third round and is tied for 36th at 3-over 219 (71-74-74). Starting on hole 10, Potter registered a pair of birdies (holes 1 and 5) on Sunday.
- Junior Tommy Morrison recorded a 2-over 74 on Sunday and is tied for 46th at 4-over 220 (67-79-74). Starting on hole 10, Morrison was 4-over through his first 12 holes before rallying for birdies on holes 5 and 7 to close out his round.
- Junior Christiaan Maas carded a 6-over 78 in his third round and is tied for 116th at 13-over 229 (78-73-78). Starting on hole 10, Maas posted a pair of birdies (holes 18 and 3) on Sunday.
