The sixth-seed Longhorns will face third-seed Florida beginning at 8:50 a.m. Central on Tuesday.
CARLSBAD, Calif. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team fired an even-par 288 on Monday to finish in sixth place after the final round of stroke play in the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa. By virtue of its top-eight showing, the sixth-seed Longhorns move on to the NCAA Match Play quarterfinals and will face third-seed Florida on Tuesday beginning at 8:50 a.m. Central (6:50 a.m. Pacific).
UT has now advanced to NCAA Match Play (final eight teams) in eight of the last 13 opportunities (2012-13-15-16-18-19-22-25), dating back to the 2012 NCAA Championship. Texas and Illinois are the only two Division I men's programs to reach Match Play in at least eight of the last 13 opportunities. The 2020 tourney was canceled due to COVID-19. In addition, Texas and Virginia are the only two schools to have their men's AND women's programs advance to the Match Play portion of the NCAA Championship this year.
During Monday's final round of stroke play, Texas counted scores from junior Tommy Morrison (2-under 70), sophomore Jack Gilbert (1-under 71), freshman Daniel Bennett (even-par 72) and junior Luke Potter (3-over 75). Gilbert was UT's top individual finisher at the NCAA Championship, as he tied for 18th place with a four-round score of even-par 288 (72-73-72-71).
"We got off to a really nice start which made things comfortable," Texas head coach John Fields said. "During the middle of the round it didn't go quite as well, but I thought the guys did a great job. I'm proud that we got through to match play. Now it's time to turn our attention to Florida, give it our best and maybe even make some adjustments and play even better."
The Longhorns recorded a 72-hole total of 5-over-par 1157 (285-291-293-288). No. 5 Arizona State earned the top seed in Match Play at 14-under 1138 (286-277-295-280), while No. 1 Auburn claimed the second seed at 12-under 1140 (286-282-286-286). No. 7 Florida garnered the third seed at 9-under 1143 (285-286-292-280).
Michael La Sasso of Ole Miss claimed individual medalist honors with a 72-hole total of 11-under 277 (68-67-70-72). La Sasso posted a two-stroke margin of victory over Phichaksn Maichon of Texas A&M, who tallied a four-round score of 9-under 279 (66-73-68-72).
"Jack Gilbert played super strong," Fields continued. "We've been talking about the compound effect of his practice over the last few months, and it showed this week. He's done a good job. We all know he's got lots of game, and this week he made it happen. I believe these guys all have a lot of quality match-play experience, but it still comes down to one shot at a time, playing your best golf, making good decisions and converting when you have opportunities. I'm looking forward to it."
Other NCAA Match Play quarterfinal contests on Tuesday will feature No. 2 seed Auburn against No. 7 seed Virginia (8:50 a.m. CT), No. 4 seed Oklahoma State against No. 5 seed Oklahoma (9:40 a.m. CT), and No. 1 seed Arizona State against No. 8 seed Ole Miss (9:40 a.m. CT). The four quarterfinal winners will meet in the Match Play semifinals on Tuesday beginning at approximately 3:15 p.m. CT.
Golf Channel will provide live national coverage of Tuesday's quarterfinals from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Central (9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Pacific) and Tuesday's semifinals from 5-9 p.m. Central (3-7 p.m. Pacific). The NCAA Championship match is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28.
