Longhorns secure spot in Austin Regional final against UTSA on Sunday evening
AUSTIN, Texas — Sophomore Casey Borba mounted his first career multi-homer effort and drove in eight runs, as No. 1 seed Texas posted a 15-8 win over No. 3 seed Kansas State on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
With the victory, the Longhorns (44-13) will face No. 2 seed UTSA in the Austin Regional final.
Borba — who came up two RBI shy of the single-game school record of 10 set by Ron Gardenhire in 1978 — smacked a grand slam in the first and crushed a three-run shot two innings later.
The third baseman also delivered an RBI single in the sixth to cap off his career day.
Borba helped Texas score its most runs in an NCAA Tournament contest since the Longhorns notched a 19-8 win over Arkansas on June 5, 2005.
As the designated away team, Texas put up a six-spot in its first trip to the plate.
Right fielder Max Belyeu belted a two-run blast to kickstart the scoring before Borba's first career grand slam.
The Wildcats (32-26) answered back with three in the bottom half, but Borba put the game out of reach with his three-run jack in the third.
Texas starter Ruger Riojas (9-3) pitched a career-long 7 1/3 innings in a 119-pitch effort. Riojas struck out six and saved the Longhorns' bullpen in the elimination game.
Righty Cody Howard tossed the final 1 2/3 frames.
Kansas State hurler Tanner Duke (2-3) was chased after recording just one out. Duke was tagged for five runs on four hits.
