No. 7 Men’s Tennis downs No. 8 Texas A&M, 4-2, at ITA Indoors

The Longhorns advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament for the eighth-straight year, while also extending their winning streak over the Aggies to eight straight.
Waco, Texas – No. 7 Texas Men's Tennis downed No. 8 Texas A&M, 4-2, in the round of 16 of the ITA National Indoor Championships in Waco on Friday. The win sent the Longhorns to the quarterfinals of the tournament for the eighth-straight year, while also extending their winning streak over the Aggies to eight straight.
Although Texas A&M moved out to a 2-0 lead with the doubles point that came via wins at Nos. 3 and 1, along with the first singles contest at No. 6, Texas responded with four-straight singles victories by freshman Abel Forger at No. 2, sophomore No. 51 Sebastian Eriksson at No. 3, senior No. 10 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1, and freshman Lucas Marionneau at No. 5 for the clinch.
Forger had started the rally with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Alexander Frusina where Forger had trailed 5-3 in the second set and deflected two set points to reach a tiebreaker where he won. Eriksson also won a tiebreaker with his coming in the first set of his 7-6 (4), 6-4 win over Kholo Montsi that evened the overall score at 2-2.
A pair of three-set victories then brought home the win for Texas with Gorzny coming from a set down to defeat No. 42 Theo Papamalamis, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. That turned the attention to the freshman Marionneau, who had won his first set, but fell in the second in a tiebreaker before ultimately emerging with the 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3 clinch over Togan Tokac to send his teammates streaming over to his court.
One singles match was left unfinished where senior Jonah Braswell had almost defeated Tiago Pires in two sets. After sweeping the first, Braswell had three match points late in the second, but Pires forced a tiebreaker and eventually a third set, which was even when play stopped, 6-0, 6-7 (4), 4-4.
Earlier in doubles, Texas A&M was off the court first with a 6-2 win by Pires and Kriish Tyagi over Forger and sophomore Evan Burnett at No. 3. The Aggies then clinched the point with a 6-3 win by Papamalamis and Tokac over Gorzny and Marionneau at No. 1. Just as that match was ending, Texas was preparing to serve on its second match point where the No. 27 duo of Eriksson and sophomore Oliver Ojakaar led the No. 33 pair of Frusina and Montsi, 5-3 (40-30) at No. 2 when play halted.
Texas will next play No. 5 TCU in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 12 p.m. CT.

Match: Three-straight games were broken that gave Texas A&M a 3-2 lead with the last game starting a 4-0 run for the final.
Doubles No. 1: Papamalamis/Tokac (TAMU) def. Gorzny/Marionneau (TEX) vs. 6-3
Match: Texas A&M earned the only breaks for a 3-2 lead and then on a deuce point for the match.

Match: Texas secured the only break for a 5-3 lead and was serving for a second match point up 40-30 in the following game when play stopped.

Set One: Molder on a 4-0 run, including a deuce-point hold in the second game, but Dedura-Palomero answered the run for 4-4. Molder broke again, but Dedura-Palomero took consecutive deuce points for a 6-5 lead before Molder held for the tiebreaker.
Set One Tiebreaker: Molder moved out to a 5-1 lead on the way to the 7-3 win.
Set Two: Six of the nine games went to deuce. After Molder broke at deuce for 2-0, Dedura-Palomero broke back at love, but Molder broke again at deuce. That was the first of five-staight deuce games that left Molder with a 5-3 lead before he served out the win.
Singles No. 2: Forger (TEX) def. Frusina (TAMU) 6-3, 7-6 (3)
Set One: Forger broke at deuce for a 3-2 lead and consolidated for 4-2 until breaking again for the set.
Set Two: Forger won 12 of the first 13 points for a 3-0 lead, but Frusina went on a 5-0 run capped by a deuce-point hold. Forger recovered and with consecutive deuce-point wins for 5-5, deflecting two set points while down 5-4.
Set Two Tiebreaker: Forger turned 2-2 into a 4-2 lead, and after Frusina made it 4-3, Forger claimed the last three points to win.
Singles No. 3: Eriksson (TEX) vs. Montsi (TAMU) 7-6 (4), 6-4
Set One: After the players exchange breaks, they both held with Montsi doing so at deuce. That was the first of four-straight games reaching deuce, but Eriksson claimed the other three for a 5-2 lead. Montsi came back to even it at 5-5 on the way to a tiebreaker.
Set One Tiebreaker: Eriksson pushed out to a 3-0 lead and although Montsi tied it, 4-4, Eriksson secured the last three points.
Set Two: Eriksson broke first at deuce for a 2-1 lead, but Montsi broke back and held for 3-2. Eriksson then won three-straight and four of the last five games to win.
Singles No. 1: Gorzny (TEX) def. Papamalamis (TAMU) 4-6, 6-3, 6-2
Set One: The players alternated winning two games each starting with Papamalamis until his 6-4 win. Gorzny's first two wins both came at deuce for 2-2.
Set Two: The first four games were identical to the first four of the first set, but this time Gorzny held at deuce to start a 3-0 run to 5-2. He then held at deuce again for the set.
Set Three: This time Gorzny won the first two games and later broke again for 4-1. Papamalamis broke back at deuce, but Gorzny captured the last two games to win.
Singles No. 5: Marionneau (TEX) def. Tokac (TAMU) 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3
Set One: Despite two deuce-point holds for Tokac, the first eight games were on serve until Marionneau got the break at deuce for a 5-4 lead and served it out.
Set Two: Tokac held and broke at deuce for a 2-0 lead, but Marionneau broke back and the rest of the set was on serve to a tiebreaker.
Set Two Tiebreaker: The players alternated points to a 4-3 lead for Tokac which he pushed to 6-3 before the 7-4 win.
Set Three: Marionneau claimed the only break for 3-1 and consolidated at deuce for 4-1.
Singles No. 4: Braswell (TEX) vs. Pires (TAMU) 6-0, 6-7 (4), 4-4
Set One: Braswell swept the set with deuce point holds for 1-0 and 3-0.
Set Two: Pires won the first two games, but Braswell won 16 of the next 18 points a for a 4-2 lead. Pires won consecutive deuce points, including recovering from 0-40 to hold for 4-4. Braswell later had three match points up 6-5 and 40-15, but Pires again managed to hold for a tiebreaker.
Set Two Tiebreaker: Pires took a 3-0 lead, and although Braswell got within 3-2 and 5-4, Pires stayed in front.
Set Three: Braswell broke and held for 2-0, and although Pires next two service games both reached deuce, he held until getting the break back for 3-3.
