Left-hander tosses career-best seven innings in 9-1 win

AUSTIN, Texas — Sophomore Dylan Volantis registered a career-long seven innings to guide No. 3 Texas (3-0) to a 9-1 victory over UC Davis (0-3) in the series finale at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.

Volantis (1-0) limited the Aggies to one unearned run on one hit, while matching a career-best eight strikeouts.

In just his second career start, the 6-foot-6, 220-pound southpaw took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, retiring 14 of the first 16 batters he faced. With one out in the frame, Zach Story broke up the no-hit bid with a double to left center.

Volantis cruised through the visiting lineup, facing the minimum through five innings. Overall, he tossed 56 of his 78 pitches for strikes.

After rallying for a pair of wins to open the series, the Longhorns backed their starter from the early innings.

First baseman Casey Borba opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the second.

One inning later, Texas exploded for six runs, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from shortstop Adrian Rodriguez.

The Longhorns sent 11 batters to the plate in the third, as center fielder Aiden Robbins and Borba delivered RBI singles following Rodriguez's big swing.

Earlier in the frame, left fielder Ashton Larson also added a run with a sacrifice fly.

Texas tacked on insurance tallies in the seventh and eighth on a pair of Aggie miscues.

Right-hander Michael Winter put on the finishing touches, pitching two scoreless in his collegiate debut. Winter notched two strikeouts to seal the sweep.

In the win, second baseman Ethan Mendoza tallied his second consecutive multi-hit game. Mendoza finished the series 6-for-12 with two home runs, seven RBI and a 1.563 OPS.

Across the weekend, the Longhorns' pitching staff allowed only five earned runs in 25 innings, posting a 1.80 ERA.
