Smallwood breaks 60m hurdles program record again; multiple Longhorns advance to finals.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Giavonna Meeks needed only her opening throw to make history for Texas Track & Field on Friday at the SEC Indoor Championships inside the Fasken Indoor Track and Field Facility.
Meeks secured the title with a mark of 24.44m (80-2.25), but her first attempt, a facility-record 23.60m (77-5.25), would have been enough. She improved the mark twice more to claim the women's weight throw crown. The winning throw ranks second in program history and sits just shy of her school record of 24.49m. Each of her five successful throws surpassed the rest of the field. Meeks now owns the top 20 marks in school history in the event and became the first Texas woman to capture an SEC indoor title in the weight throw.
Kendrick Smallwood continued his record-breaking run in the men's 60-meter hurdles, clocking 7.46 seconds in the prelims to reset his Texas record for the third consecutive meet and advance to Saturday's final. Smallwood owns seven of the top eight performances in school history in the event.
In the heptathlon, Brock Lewis totaled 5,043 points to finish seventh. He cleared 4.40m (14-5.25) in the pole vault, ran 8.72 in the 60-meter hurdles and closed the competition with a 2:49.05 in the 1,000 meters.
On the track, Carleta Bernard advanced to the women's 60-meter final after winning her heat in 7.25.
Lucas Bons qualified for the men's mile final with a 4:02.96, the sixth-fastest time of the prelims. Hudson Bennett posted a personal-best 4:08.38, and Zain Hamdani added a season-best 4:10.58.
In the women's mile, Isabel Conde de Frankenberg ran a personal-best 4:41.77 to move to No. 6 on the Texas all-time performers list with the eighth-best mark in program history, finishing 12th and just outside the final cutoff. Aishling Callanan recorded a season-best 4:50.81.
Bayleigh Minor won the opening heat of the women's 400 meters in a personal-best 52.54, finishing with the 11th-fastest time overall. Anouk Krause-Jentsch (53.45) and Mackenzie Collins (54.19) also posted personal bests.
In the men's 400, Chris Brinkley Jr. led the Longhorns with a 46.91. Kody Blackwood followed with a personal-best 47.04, and Conor Kelly added a personal best of 47.64.
Grace Kowalski placed 15th in the women's 800-meter prelims with a personal-best 2:09.57, and Caroline Peterson matched her career best in the high jump, clearing 1.71m (5-7.25).
The SEC Indoor Championships conclude on Saturday, Feb. 28 starting at 2:00 p.m. with the women's shot put and the men's high jump.
