No. 4 Men’s Golf climbs into third place after second round at Amer Ari Invitational

Potter continues his strong start and is third in the individual standings at 16-under overall through 36 holes.
WAIMEA, Hawaii — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team fired a second round-best 24-under 264 on Friday to climb into third place after the second day of the Amer Ari Invitational at Mauna Lani Resort. Senior Luke Potter, who carded a career-low 18-hole score of 9-under 63 in Thursday's opening round, returned on Friday and posted a 7-under 65 to rest in third place in the individual standings at 16-under 128 (63-65) through 36 holes.
In Friday's round, Texas counted scores from Potter (7-under 65), sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (6-under 66), senior Christiaan Maas (6-under 66) and senior Tommy Morrison (5-under 67) to record a team round of 24-under 264. The Longhorns, who were tied for sixth and 13 strokes off the lead after the opening round, moved up into solo third place with a 36-hole total of 43-under 533 (269-264) and are just four strokes off the lead entering Saturday's final round.
No. 7 Auburn holds a three-stroke lead in the team standings at 47-under 529 (256-273), while Stanford is second at 44-under 532 (261-271). No. 5 Arizona State is in fourth place at 42-under 534 (265-269). The 20-team field features nine squads in the top 25 and four in the top 10 of the final fall Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Oct. 31).
Jackson Koivun of Auburn owns a two-stroke lead in the individual standings after 36 holes with a 20-under 124 (62-62). Arizona State's Michael Mjaaseth is second at 18-under 126 (63-63), while Potter is third at 16-under 128 (63-65). Derbez Torres is tied for 12th at 10-under 134 (68-66).
The Amer Ari Invitational concludes with a final round on Saturday, Feb. 7. Texas will be paired with Auburn, Stanford and Arizona State during Saturday's final round which begins at 11:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. HT) with a shotgun start.
The Lineup
- Senior Luke Potter fired a 7-under 65 on Friday and is in third place in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 16-under 128 (63-65). Starting on hole 5 today, Potter was even-par through his first eight holes before tallying birdies on holes 13, 16, 18, 1 and 2 along with an eagle on the par-five 15th hole to close out his 7-under round.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres carded a 6-under 66 in his second round and is tied for 12th at 10-under 134 (68-66). Starting on hole 6 today, he made a remarkable 10 birdies (holes 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 16, 17, 1, 2 and 5) against four bogeys for his 6-under round.
- Senior Christiaan Maas registered a 6-under 66 on Friday and jumped 25 spots into a tie for 17th at 9-under 135 (69-66). Starting on hole 4 today, Maas was 2-under through his first 15 holes before finishing his round with three consecutive birdies on holes 1, 2 and 3 to post his 6-under round.
- Senior Tommy Morrison recorded a 5-under 67 in his second round and climbed 23 spots into a tie for 19th at 8-under 136 (69-67). Starting on hole 6, he was 1-over through four holes before making an eagle on the par-five 10th hole to move to 1-under. Morrison remained at 1-over through 13 holes before concluding his round with four consecutive birdies on holes 2, 3, 4 and 5 to card his 5-under round.
- Graduate Matt Comegys fired a 2-under 70 on Friday and is tied for 44th at 5-under 139 (69-70). Starting on hole 7, Comegys tallied five birdies (holes 10, 15, 1, 2 and 6) to post his 2-under round.
- Competing as an individual, junior Jack Gilbert registered a 2-under 70 in his second round and is tied for 64th at 2-under 142 (70-72). Starting on hole 16, Gilbert was 1-over through 15 holes before making three straight birdies on holes 13, 14 and 15 to finish at 2-under.
