No. 1 Softball sweeps Sunday doubleheader to conclude opening weekend

The Longhorns defeated No. 25 Washington, 5-0, in six innings before taking down tournament host UTSA, 10-0, in five innings.
SAN ANTONIO – No. 1 Texas Softball (4-1) swept its doubleheader against No. 25 Washington (2-3) and UTSA (0-3) Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field to close out the UTSA Invitational. The Longhorns downed No. 25 Washington, 5-0, in six innings before defeating UTSA, 10-0, in five innings.
Texas moves to 4-1 on the season with three top-25 victories. In game two vs. UTSA, senior Reese Atwood tied the program's career home run record after hitting her 58th long ball.
The Longhorn pitching staff did not allow a run across 11 innings, while recording 10 strikeouts. Texas' defense played flawless and did not record an error on the day.
The Texas offense combined for 17 hits, including four home runs.
Game 1
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan twirled a three-hit, complete game shutout, to power Texas to a 5-0 victory in six innings vs. No. 25 Washington. The game was cut short following the sixth inning due to Washington's travel schedule.
Kavan (2-0) picked up her second win of the season after spinning six scoreless frames, limiting the Huskies to a season-low three hits. Kavan notched six strikeouts and worked around three walks. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native registered a 1-2-3 frame in the second. Kavan and the defense stranded five Huskies and worked around runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth.
Offensively, Texas strung together seven hits against the Huskies, highlighted by junior Katie Stewart, who finished 1-for-3 with a two-run home run. Freshman MaTaia Lawson went 1-for-2 with an RBI single. Junior Viviana Martinez also knocked in a run off a single.
After a scoreless first from both teams, the Horns jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Lawson roped an RBI single up the middle to score Atwood from second base and give UT a 1-0 lead. Then, Leighann Goode scored on a wild pitch from third for a 2-0 edge.
Texas put up a three-spot in the third inning, beginning with Martinez's RBI single to left center to push home Ashton Maloney for a 3-0 lead. Stewart mashed a towering two-run home run to left field for a 5-0 lead.
Game 2
Highlighted by Atwood's program-record tying 58th career home run, the Longhorns capped the weekend with a five-inning 10-0 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners in game two.
Freshman RHP Hannah Wells (1-1) earned her first career win after spinning a three-hit, complete game shutout. The Coahoma, Texas, product struck out four across five innings of work and worked around three walks.
Atwood finished 2-for-3 with a two-run home run – her third home run of the weekend – and a walk to lead Texas offensively. Freshman Caigan Crabtree hit her first career home run after dismantling a solo bomb in the fifth. Stewart hit her second homer of the day and team-leading fourth of the season. In her second career start and first at third base, freshman Alisa Sneed went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Maloney also had an RBI double after going 1-for-3. Kayden Henry, Jaycie Nichols and Taylor Anderson added a hit apiece.

Texas returns to the friendly confines of McCombs Field to host the Bevo Classic from Feb. 12-15. The Longhorns' home opener is slated for 6 p.m. CT Thursday, Feb. 12, at McCombs Field. All six of UT's games at the Bevo Classic will be available on SEC Network+.
