AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman designated player Hannah Wells drove in junior shortstop Viviana Martinez in the bottom of the seventh to help No. 1 Texas Softball (30-1) secure a 9-8 walk-off victory against No. 15 Texas A&M in Friday night's series opener at McCombs Field.
It was Texas' first walk-off win of the season and first since defeating Ole Miss, 7-6, on May 8, 2025 at the SEC Tournament.
Extending its win streak to a program and national-best 28 games, Texas improves to 30-1 overall and remains unbeaten in Southeastern Conference play with a 7-0 record. Texas is 16-0 at home and 10-1 against ranked opponents this season.
The Longhorns combined for 10 runs with six going for extra bases while drawing four free passes (three walks, one hit by pitch).
Viviana Martinez was the star of the night for the Longhorns, compiling her second career multi-home run performance while tying her career high in hits, going 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, two doubles, four RBI and three runs scored. Martinez was Texas' winning run in the seventh. Prior to the game, Martinez had not homered this season. After missing the 2025 season with an injury, it was Martinez's first home run since May 17, 2024. Senior right fielder Ashton Maloney had her fourth multi-hit game of the year, putting together a 2-for-3 night with an RBI and double. Junior center fielder Kayden Henry pummeled a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the first for the Horns. Hannah Wells drove in two runs, including the walk-off in the seventh, in her 1-for-4 night. Senior second baseman Leighann Goode connected on an RBI single.
Junior RHP Teagan Kavan (13-0) got the win in her 13th start of the season. Kavan went the game's first 2.2 innings and then re-entered the game in the sixth to pitch 4.2 innings in total. In her first 2.2 innings, the West Des Moines, Iowa, product surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and walked two batters. In her final 2.0 innings, Kavan shut the door on the Aggies and retired six of seven batters faced with four strikeouts. One Texas A&M player reached base via error in the top of the seventh with two away. Senior RHP Citlaly Gutierrez tossed 2.1 innings of relief in the third through fifth frames. Gutierrez gave up three earned runs on six hits while fanning one batter.
Texas A&M struck early in the first on a one-out, RBI single to left for a 1-0 lead. The Longhorns responded quickly in the bottom half thanks to solo homers from Henry and Martinez, putting the Horns in front 2-1.
The Aggies evened it at 2-2 in the second on an RBI single and then scored three additional runs in the third to carry a 5-2 advantage. Texas strung together a three-spot in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 5-5. Maloney began the third with a leadoff double to right center followed by a Henry walk. Then, Goode smacked an RBI single through the left side to plate Maloney from second and bring Texas within two runs. Martinez mashed her first double of the game down the right field line to score two more and make it 5-5.
Texas A&M regained its lead on a two-run homer in the fourth, positioning the Aggies with a 7-5 lead. Texas trimmed the lead to 7-6 on Maloney's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.
The Aggies pushed their lead to 8-6 in the fifth on an RBI single, and Martinez cracked her second home run of the game, a solo shot to center, in the bottom of the fifth to bring Texas back within a run. Wells then barreled an RBI single to the left field wall to tie it at 8-8.
In the bottom of the seventh, Martinez roped a leadoff double to left center to put a runner in scoring position for the Horns. Senior catcher Reese Atwood was intentionally walked, and then Stewart was struck by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Wells' hard grounder to short was enough to drive in Martinez from third for the walk-off win.
