No. 4 Men’s Golf concludes day one at Southern Highlands Collegiate

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 2-over 290 on Sunday to rest in eighth place after the opening day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate at Southern Highlands Golf Club. Senior Christiaan Maas recorded a 2-under 70 to pace the Longhorns and is tied for 14th in the individual standings through 18 holes.
Texas is playing without sophomore All-American Daniel Bennett, who will be competing at the PGA TOUR's Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard this coming week (March 5-8) in Orlando. During Sunday's opening round, the Longhorns counted scores from Maas (2-under 70), senior Luke Potter (even-par 72), sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (2-over 74) and senior Tommy Morrison (2-over 74) for a team score of 2-over 290.
No. 1 Virginia holds a five-stroke lead in the team standings at 11-under 277, while No. 7 Auburn is second at 6-under 282. No. 8 Florida and Washington are tied for third at 5-under 283. The Longhorns are 13 strokes off the lead but just three strokes out of fifth place entering Monday's second round. The 15-team field features nine squads in the top 25 and five in the top 10 of the final fall Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Oct. 31).
Paul Chang of Virginia owns a one-stroke lead after the opening 18 holes with a 6-under 66. Auburn's Jackson Koivun and Harry Takis of San Diego State are tied for second at 5-under 67.
The Southern Highland Collegiate continues with 18 holes on Monday, March 2 and concludes with a final round on Tuesday, March 3. Texas will be paired with Texas A&M and UCLA during Monday's second round which begins at 11 a.m. CT (9 a.m. PT) on hole 1.
The Lineup
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 2-under 70 on Sunday and is tied for 14th in the individual standings. Maas recorded four birdies (holes 7, 13, 14 and 16) and an eagle on the par-five 3rd hole during his opening round.
- Senior Luke Potter carded an even-par 72 in his opening round and is tied for 27th place. Potter tallied three birdies (holes 4, 12 and 15) on Sunday.
- Senior Tommy Morrison registered a 2-over 74 on Sunday and is tied for 42nd place. Morrison posted a pair of birdies (holes 3 and 9) during his opening round.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres recorded a 2-over 74 in his opening round and is tied for 42nd. Derbez Torres tallied a pair of birdies (holes 16 and 18) and an eagle on the par-five 9th hold on Sunday.
- Graduate Matt Comegys posted a 4-over 76 on Sunday and is tied for 62nd. Comegys recorded a pair of birdies (holes 3 and 16) during his opening round.
- Competing as an individual, freshman Adam Villanueva carded a 3-over 75 in his opening round and is tied for 53rd. Starting on hole 10, Villanueva posted three birdies (holes 1, 3 and 9) on Sunday.
