The Longhorns had late chances in both doubles and singles and led in the remaining two singles contests but came up short.
Austin – No. 3 Texas Men's Tennis fell to No. 28 Oklahoma, 4-1, on Sunday at the Texas Tennis Center. The loss snapped a 12-match winning streak in the rivalry for the Longhorns, who had late chances in both doubles and singles and led in the remaining two singles contests when play stopped.
During doubles, Oklahoma won six of the seven deuce points and had two of the three breaks combined across the three matches with all three breaks coming in the match at No. 2. The Sooners won that match as the No. 14 pair of sophomores Oliver Ojakaar and Sebastian Eriksson were downed by Alejandro Melero and Hank Trondson, 6-3.
The other two doubles contests both stayed on serve throughout with the deciding match at No. 1 going to a tiebreaker where the No. 13 pair of senior Sebastian Gorzny and freshman Lucas Marionneau fell to No. 53 Bruno Nhavene and Luis Alvarez, 7-6 (0). In the remaining match at No. 3, senior Jonah Braswell and sophomore Evan Burnett were trailing but on serve, 4-5, against Johan Rodriguez and Asahi Harazaki.
Although both missing from doubles, freshman No. 20 Kalin Ivanovski and No. 65 Abel Forger played singles, but Forger was downed by Rodriguez, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4 to give Oklahoma a 2-0 lead.
Marionneau later cut that deficit to one when he registered a ranked win over No. 109 Asahi Harazaki, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 6. From there, the matches at both Nos. 2 and 3 needed late breaks in order to get back on serve in their second sets, but No. 37 Eriksson was downed by Orel Kimhi, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3, and then Ivanovski had forced a deuce point in his attempt to break at No. 2, but No. 108 Oscar Lacides managed to hold to clinch the overall match, 6-4, 6-4.
In the remaining matches, Ojakaar was potentially one game away from serving out a win, as he lead Melero, 6-1, 3-6, 5-3 when play stopped. Meanwhile, No. 4 Gorzny was up a set and on serve in the second against No. 45 Alvarez, 7-6 (5), 2-3.
The Longhorns (14-6, 5-2 SEC) will return to the road for matches at No. 13 Vanderbilt on Friday, March 20, at 5 p.m. CT, and at No. 33 Kentucky on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
