Nashville – No. 3 Texas Men's Tennis swept to No. 13 Vanderbilt, 4-0, on Friday at the Lummis Family Tennis Center in Nashville. It was the first of a pair of weekend road match for the Longhorns.
Texas snapped a string of having lost four-straight doubles points and six of the last seven by securing wins at Nos. 3 and 2 with Vanderbilt winning at No. 1 in between. The Longhorns then followed with singles victories by senior No. 4 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1, sophomore No. 43 Sebastian Eriksson at No. 3, and freshman Lucas Marionneau at No. 6. Senior Jonah Braswell was also two points from a possible win at No. 4 when play stopped.
In doubles, the No. 19 duo of Eriksson and sophomore Oliver Ojakaar were first off the court with a 6-3 win over Hugo Coquelin and Jack Satterfield at No. 3. Freshmen Kalin Ivanovski and Abel Forger then had a deuce point to break and get back on serve in the final game, but No. 29 Nathan Cox and Hoyoung Roh were able to hold for a 6-4 win at No.1. That left it to No. 2 where the No. 23 pair of Gorzny and Marionneay came through with a 6-4 win of their own to clinch against Pablo Martinez Gomez and Danil Panarin.
Gorzny then gave Texas a 2-0 overall lead with a 6-3, 6-4 ranked win over No. 111 Martinez Gomez, and Eriksson later extended it to 3-0 with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory over Cox.
Marionneau and Braswell were then coming down to the wire at the same time with Marionneau crossing the finish line first in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-1, 7-6 (2) over Coquelin at No. 6. Meanwhile Braswell led Satterfield, 6-4, 5-3 (30-15) at No. 5 when play stopped.
Two other matches were also unfinished with the Longhorns leading in one and even in the other. It was No. 19 Ivanovski who had just split sets against No. 70 Roh, 4-6, 7-5, at No. 2, and Ojakaar had a break lead in his third set against Panarin, 2-6, 6-0, 4-2 at No. 4. Ojakaar had rallied from dropping his first set to win nine straight games, which might have been 12 if Panarin hadn't held on two deuce points in the third set.
The Longhorns (15-6, 6-2 SEC) will continue on the road for a match at No. 33 Kentucky on Sunday, March 22, at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT.
