Sophomore tosses six innings of one-run baseball to clinch series
AUSTIN, Texas — In his first career Southeastern Conference start, Dylan Volantis recorded a career-best 11 strikeouts to propel No. 2 Texas to an 8-2 win over Ole Miss at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Sunday afternoon.
Volantis (3-0) pitched six innings of one-run baseball, as the Longhorns (18-1, 2-1 SEC) secured their SEC-opening series over the Rebels (16-5, 1-2 SEC).
The 6-foot-6, 220-pound southpaw struck out multiple batters in four of the first five frames, punching out the side in the fifth.
Volantis held Ole Miss to five hits and one walk over his career-high 102 pitches.
Right-hander Sam Cozart (1) tossed the final three innings to lock down his first career save. Cozart yielded one unearned run, punching out five of the last eight Rebels.
In the victory, Carson Tinney and Casey Borba both smacked two-run homers.
Tinney finished 3-for-4 with three RBI, highlighted by his 465-foot shot that cleared the 32-foot "monster" in center. The catcher's first-inning blast pushed Texas in front, 2-0.
Meanwhile, Borba notched his fourth multi-hit effort in his last five games, highlighted by his fourth home run of the week. The junior jacked a 419-foot rocket over the YETI Yard in left, ballooning the advantage to 5-0 in the fourth.
Sparked by the power display, the Longhorns raced out to a six-run advantage before the fifth inning.
Judd Utermark registered a run-scoring single to put Ole Miss on the board, but Volantis limited the damage to one.
Texas tacked on two insurance tallies in the sixth, capped off by Tinney's RBI base hit.
The Rebels plated an unearned run in the seventh, capitalizing on a defensive miscue.
The Longhorns close out their four-game home swing against Tarleton State on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
