Tinney homers for second straight contest in defeat
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 2 Texas came up short against Tarleton State, falling to the Texans, 6-1, at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday evening.
Carson Tinney smacked a solo shot to push the Longhorns (18-2) ahead in the opening frame, but Tarleton State (13-7) recorded a quartet of runs in the fourth to cruise to its highest-ranked win in program history.
Cage McCloud delivered the game-tying hit in the decisive fourth before Brady Englett drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Texans in front, 2-1.
Two batters later, Ike Shirey followed with a two-run single to balloon the advantage to 4-1.
Tarleton State tacked on an insurance tally in both the seventh and nine innings.
The Texans used five different pitchers to hold the Longhorns to two hits. The quintet combined for 12 strikeouts.
Ethan Jaques (3-0) earned the win, tossing three hitless innings in relief of opener Brendon Carter. The righty struck out four of the 10 batters he faced.
Up next, the Longhorns travel to face No. 5 Auburn at Plainsman Park. The three-game set begins at 6 p.m. CT. on Friday.
