Longhorns notch first road win against top-5 team in regular season for first time since 2021
AUBURN, Ala. — No. 2 Texas raced out to a six-run lead and held off a late charge from No. 5 Auburn, registering a 7-6 win in front a record-setting 8,037 fans at Plainsman Park on Saturday night.
With the victory, the Longhorns (19-3, 3-2 SEC) notched their first road win over a top-5 team in the regular season since defeating No. 3 TCU on May 9, 2021.
The Tigers (19-3, 4-1 SEC) loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Texas closer Thomas Burns (3) induced a ground out to snap Auburn's 12-game winning streak.
The inning prior, Burns also stranded a pair in scoring position, striking out Ethin Bingaman to eliminate the threat. The right-hander was called upon after the Tigers scored three tallies in the seventh and added one in the eight to pull within a run.
The Longhorns jumped out to a 6-0 cushion, highlighted by a four-spot in the third.
For the third time in five at-bats, center fielder Aiden Robbins launched a home run, ringing a 109-mph rocket off the batter's eye to lead off the frame.
Following back-to-back outs, Texas mounted a two-out rally to set the stage for right fielder Jayden Duplantier. In his 126th career at-bat, Duplantier delivered his first career homer, smacking a three-run shot over the 37-foot monster in left.
The pair of blasts followed a two-out, two-run single from designated hitter Maddox Monsour an inning earlier. Monsour finished with a game-best three hits in his first career SEC start.
Auburn chipped away, scratching across tallies on consecutive ground outs in the fourth.
Texas catcher Carson Tinney produced a sixth-inning RBI double to pad the Longhorns' advantage to 7-2. Tinney's extra-base knock proved to be the difference in the series-evening victory.
Starter Luke Harrison (3-0) yielded two runs on four hits across 5 2/3 frames. Harrison collected six strikeouts before giving way to Texas' bullpen.
The left-hander worked around a no-out bases-loaded jam in the opening inning, retiring the next nine batters he faced to help the Longhorns vault ahead.
Texas will look to secure the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Plainsman Park.
