Five Longhorns combine for four-hit shutout in series-securing win
AUBURN, Ala. — No. 2 Texas tossed its first-ever shutout in Southeastern Conference play, defeating No. 5 Auburn, 5-0, at Plainsman Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Longhorns (20-3, 4-2 SEC) held one of the nation's top teams to just four hits, clinching their first road series win over a top-5 team in five years.
Sophomore left-hander Dylan Volantis set the tone against the Tigers (19-4, 4-2 SEC), pitching four scoreless frames. Volantis totaled four strikeouts, highlighted by an inning-ending punchout that stranded a pair in the second.
Freshman righty Sam Cozart (4-0) picked up where Volantis left off, twirling 2 2/3 hitless frames of his own. Cozart retired six of the first seven batters he faced, collecting three strikeouts.
Redshirt junior southpaw Ethan Walker, freshman right-hander Brett Crossland and senior righty Max Grubbs teamed up to record the final eight outs to earn the victory.
Texas' offense backed the staff from the onset, as Casey Borba blasted a two-run shot over the 37-foot monster in left. The go-ahead jack in the second marked Borba's seventh home run in the last 11 games.
In the fourth, Carson Tinney doubled the Longhorns' lead with a two-strike, two-out, base hit to right. Tinney's two-RBI single padded the advantage to 4-0.
Texas pushed across its fifth and final tally one inning later, capitalizing on a bases-loaded threat.
The Longhorns continue their four-game road swing at Houston on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Schroeder Park.
