Longhorns notch largest shutout win in series history
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 2 Texas blanked No. 8 Oklahoma, 14-0, in a seven-inning contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Thursday night.
In the 233rd installment of the Red River Rivalry, the Longhorns (20-4, 5-2 SEC) recorded their largest shutout victory in series history, surpassing an 11-0 win on March 10, 1961. Texas also matched its second-biggest margin of victory against the Sooners (19-6, 4-3 SEC), defeating Oklahoma by 14 runs for the first time in nearly 40 years.
The Longhorns scored at least three runs in four of the first five innings, as all nine starting position players notched a hit.
Casey Borba led the charge offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and a season-best six RBI. Borba drove in a pair as part of the four-run first before delivering a two-RBI double in the three-run third. The junior capped off the outburst with a two-run blast in the fifth.
Jayden Duplantier added three RBI, highlighted by a two-run single in the fourth. Duplantier's third-inning RBI double marked his 12th hit of the season, setting a new career high for the senior.
Meanwhile, Aiden Robbins and Temo Becerra both mounted three hits and scored a trio of runs in the win.
On the mound, Ruger Riojas (5-0) became the first Longhorn to post a complete game shutout since Pete Hansen accomplished the feat against TCU on April 8, 2022. Riojas struck out eight across seven scoreless, scattering six hits along the way. The righty tossed 105 pitches to earn his fifth win in his first seven starts.
Oklahoma hurler LJ Mercurius (5-2) was tagged with the loss. Mercurius only registered six outs, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits. The junior was chased after allowing four straight hits to begin the third.
Texas will look to secure the series on Friday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
