Longhorns use seven-run fifth to best Spartans, 11-9
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 3 Texas registered a seven-spot in the fifth and held off a late USC Upstate rally, logging an 11-9 victory at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday.
After the Spartans (7-9) put the tying tally on first and brought the go-ahead run to the plate, the Longhorns (14-0) turned to right-handed pitcher Michael Winter. Winter got Henry Zenor to fly out to center, extending Texas' season-opening winning streak to 14 games.
USC Upstate answered the Longhorns' co-season-best seven-run frame, scoring six times in the ninth. Texas used four pitchers in the final inning, with Winter slamming the door to earn his first career save.
Overall, nine different Longhorns appeared on the mound, beginning with Luke Harrison. Harrison struck out a season-high seven across 4 2/3 frames, while yielding two earned runs.
In its fourth straight double-digit hit performance, all nine Texas starting position players reached safely, highlighted by Aiden Robbins' three-RBI effort.
Robbins rocketed a game-winning two-run blast to spark the crooked number in the middle innings. The junior's team-leading sixth homer matched his career high set previously in each of his two seasons at Seton Hall.
With Texas ahead, 5-3, in the fifth, Casey Borba followed with a two-RBI single to pad the lead. Two pitches later, Ashton Larson doubled home Borba, pushing the advantage to 8-3.
Carson Tinney and Adrian Rodriguez both drew bases-loaded walks to cap off the seven-run inning.
Saturday's near four-hour marathon — which was originally scheduled for 2 p.m. before being pushed back until 4 p.m. — featured an 84-minute weather delay that halted play in the sixth.
The Longhorns will look to win their 15th straight game in the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is set for noon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
