Senior Christiaan Maas is one of 10 players in contention for the award that honors the nation’s top collegiate men’s golfer.
FORT WORTH, Texas — University of Texas Men's Golf senior Christiaan Maas has been selected as one of 10 semifinalists for the 2026 Ben Hogan Award presented by Baird, the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation announced Thursday. The Ben Hogan Award annually honors the top men's collegiate golfer based on all collegiate, amateur and professional events over the previous 12 months.
An esteemed international selection committee, comprised of 40 leaders in collegiate, amateur and professional golf, votes during each stage of the process. In addition to Maas, the nine other semifinalists include Mahanth Chirravuri (Pepperdine), Ryder Cowan (Oklahoma), Ethan Fang (Oklahoma State), Filip Jakubcik (Arizona), Ben James (Virginia), Jackson Koivun (Auburn), Preston Stout (Oklahoma State), Harry Takis (San Diego State) and Tyler Weaver (Florida State).
Maas is No. 4 in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (April 15) and No. 2 in the latest PGA TOUR University ranking (April 15). A three-time SEC Golfer of the Week selection this year (Oct. 1, Oct. 15 and March 4), he has played in 10 of UT's first 11 events this season and sports a 69.80 scoring average through 30 rounds while recording one victory and a total of six top-eight individual finishes. Twenty-one (21) of his 30 rounds this year have been par or better, including 13 rounds in the 60s.
Maas claimed individual medalist honors by two strokes against an elite field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate (March 1-3) with a 10-under 206 (70-68-68). He claimed low amateur honors with his tie for 10th-place finish at the DP World Tour's Hero Dubai Desert Classic (Dubai, UAE) on Jan. 22-25, as he posted a 72-hole score of 6-under 282 (70-71-69-72). Maas won the individual title by 10 strokes and paired with teammate Daniel Bennett to pace Team South Africa to the team crown at the 2025 World Amateur Team Championships (Oct. 8-11) in Singapore. He became the first individual from South Africa and first from the African continent to win the Eisenhower Trophy with a four-round score of 22-under 266 (66-66-65-69). Maas helped South Africa claim an eight-shot victory over runner-up Australia to mark the first team championship for South Africa in tournament history. He advanced to a five-man playoff and shared runner-up honors at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 29-30) with a 1-under 209 (70-71-68). Maas also advanced to a playoff and posted a runner-up finish earlier this week at The Ford Collegiate (April 13-14) with a 13-under 197 (69-64-64).
The Ben Hogan Award has honored the outstanding amateur collegiate golfer at Colonial Country Club since 2002. This year marks the 25th anniversary in Fort Worth. The original Ben Hogan Trophy, which utilized a different set of criteria, was issued by the Friends of Golf (FOG) at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles beginning in 1990.
This year's three finalists will be named on Tuesday, May 12. The finalists will attend a black-tie dinner on Memorial Day (Monday, May 25) at the TCU Legends Club in Fort Worth, Texas, where the winner will be crowned.
