No. 5 Softball suffers setback in game two at No. 13 Georgia

Monday night’s rubber match between Texas and Georgia is set for 6 p.m. CT on SEC Network.
ATHENS, Ga. – No. 5 Texas Softball fell to No. 13 Georgia, 4-2, in game two Sunday afternoon at Jack Turner Softball Stadium. Texas won the series opener, 7-5, on Saturday.
Texas moves to 34-7 overall, 11-6 in conference play and 14-7 against ranked opponents.
The Longhorns jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a one-out RBI single through the right side by junior shortstop Viviana Martinez, which scored junior first baseman Katie Stewart from second base. Then, freshman RHP Hannah Wells pummeled a sacrifice fly to the left center warning track to plate senior catcher Reese Atwood for a 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs scored four unanswered runs, highlighted by a three-run third inning. Georgia added its fourth run in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead.
The Horns combined for four hits with Atwood, Martinez, freshman third baseman Jaycie Nichols and senior right fielder Ashton Maloney collecting a base knock apiece.
Wells (5-3) made the start in the circle and went 2.0 frames, giving up three runs on four hits while punching out a pair of batters and issuing one walk. Sophomore LHP Brenlee Gonzales replaced Wells in the third and twirled 2.0 innings of relief, surrendering one run on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior RHP Citlaly Gutierrez took over in the fifth and pitched 2.0 innings in relief with three strikeouts. Gutierrez limited the Bulldogs to three hits and did not give up a walk.
