No. 3 Men’s Golf tied for third after opening round at SEC Championship

SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team carded an 11-under 269 on Wednesday to rest in a tie for third place after the opening round of the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club. Sophomore Daniel Bennett and senior Christiaan Maas each fired a 4-under 66 and are tied for 12th in the individual standings after the opening 18 holes.
In addition to the efforts of Bennett and Maas, Texas counted scores from graduate Matt Comegys (2-under 68) and senior Luke Potter (1-under 69) in Wednesday's opening round.
No. 12 Ole Miss registered a 15-under 265 on Wednesday and holds a one-stroke lead in the team standings. No. 16 Oklahoma is second at 14-under 266, followed by a three-way tie for third at 11-under 269 that includes No. 1 Auburn and No. 4 Florida along with the Longhorns.
Oklahoma's Ryder Cowan owns the individual lead after the first 18 holes, as he carded an 8-under 62 in the opening round. A group of eight players are two strokes off the lead and tied for second at 6-under 64.
The SEC Championship will continue with 18 holes of stroke play each on Thursday, April 23 and Friday, April 24. Following Friday's stroke-play round, the top eight teams will advance to the match-play portion of the Championship. Match-play quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested on Saturday, April 25, while the final is scheduled for Sunday, April 26.
Texas will be paired with Alabama, Mississippi State and South Carolina for Thursday's second round, and tee times will begin at 7 a.m. Central (8 a.m. Eastern) off the 10th tee.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett carded a 4-under 66 on Wednesday and is tied for 12th in the individual standings. He posted a clean card in his opening round with four birdies (holes 2, 6, 14 and 16) to go along with 14 pars. The 66 tied a season-low 18-hole score for Bennett, marking the third time this year that he posted the score.
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 4-under 66 in his opening round and is tied for 12th. Maas was 1-over through his opening five holes but rallied to record five birdies (holes 6, 7, 10, 11 and 15) and eight pars in his final 13 holes to close out his 4-under 66.
- Graduate Matt Comegys posted a 2-under 68 on Wednesday and is tied for 23rd. Comegys registered five birdies (holes 4, 5, 13, 14 and 17) during his opening round.
- Senior Luke Potter recorded a 1-under 69 in his opening round and is tied for 31st. Potter posted five birdies (holes 1, 4, 5, 6 and 13) on Wednesday.
- Senior Tommy Morrison registered a 1-over 71 on Wednesday and is tied for 52nd. Morrison tallied three birdies (holes 6, 7 and 15) during his opening round.
