No. 4 Men’s Golf climbs to second after day two at SEC Championship

SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team posted an 11-under 269 on Thursday to move up to second place after the second round of the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club. Graduate Matt Comegys paced the Longhorns with a 5-under 65 on Thursday and is tied for eighth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 7-under 133 (68-65).
Starting on the back nine in his second round, Comegys recorded birdies on five of his first six holes and made the turn at 6-under. He reached 7-under in his round after a birdie on hole 1 (his 10th hole of the day) before a pair of late bogeys closed out his 5-under 65. In addition to Comegys, Texas counted scores from senior Christiaan Maas (3-under 67), senior Tommy Morrison (2-under 68) and sophomore Daniel Bennett (1-under 69) in Thursday's second round for a team score of 11-under 269.
No. 1 Auburn registered a 16-under 264 on Thursday and holds a five-stroke lead in the team standings with a 36-hole total of 27-under 533 (269-264). The Longhorns, who began the day in a tie for third place, are in second at 22-under 538 (269-269). No. 12 Ole Miss is third at 21-under 539 (265-274), and No. 3 Florida is fourth at 20-under 540 (269-271).
Auburn's Jackson Koivun owns the individual lead after the first 36 holes with a two-round score of 12-under 128 (64-64). William Jennings of Alabama (64-66) and Oklahoma's Jase Summy (65-65) are tied for second at 10-under 130 entering Friday's final 18 holes of stroke play. Both Comegys (68-65) and Maas (66-67) are tied for eighth at 7-under 133.
The SEC Championship will continue with 18 holes of stroke play on Friday, April 24. Following Friday's stroke-play round, the top eight teams will advance to the match-play portion of the Championship. Match-play quarterfinals and semifinals will be contested on Saturday, April 25, while the final is scheduled for Sunday, April 26.
Texas will be paired with Auburn, Ole Miss and Florida for Friday's third round, and tee times will begin at 8:15 a.m. Central (9:15 a.m. Eastern) off the 1st tee.
The Lineup
- Graduate Matt Comegys carded a 5-under 65 on Thursday and is tied for eighth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 7-under 133 (68-65). Starting on the back nine, Comegys birdied five of his first six holes (10, 11, 12, 14 and 15) and added a sixth birdie on 18 to make the turn at 6-under. He reached 7-under with another birdie on 1 before making bogey on holes 6 and 8 to close out his 5-under 65.
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 3-under 67 in his second round and is tied for eighth with a two-round score of 7-under 133 (66-67). Maas tallied five birdies (holes 14, 15, 17, 1 and 7) on Thursday.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett posted a 1-under 69 on Thursday and is tied for 18th with a 36-hole total of 5-under 135 (66-69). Bennett registered a pair of birdies (holes 15 and 4) during his second round.
- Senior Tommy Morrison recorded a 2-under 68 in his second round and is tied for 37th with a two-round score of 1-under 139 (71-68). Morrison tallied five birdies (holes 10, 12, 15, 2 and 7) on Thursday.
- Senior Luke Potter registered a 1-over 71 on Thursday and is tied for 44th with a 36-hole total of even-par 140 (69-71). Potter posted a pair of birdies (holes 3 and 7) during his second round.
