No. 3 Men’s Golf advances to Match Play at SEC Championship

Maas ties for third in the individual standings at 10-under; Longhorns claim No. 3 seed and face No. 6 seed Mississippi State in quarterfinals.
SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team carded an 8-under 272 on Friday in the final round of stroke play to earn its way into the match play portion of the SEC Championship at Sea Island Golf Club. The Longhorns claimed the No. 3 seed in match play and will face No. 6 seed Mississippi State in the quarterfinals on Saturday, April 25 (7:20 a.m. Central/8:20 a.m. Eastern).
Senior Christiaan Maas tied for third in the individual standings with a three-round score of 10-under 200 (66-67-67). During Friday's final round of stroke play, the Longhorns counted scores from senior Tommy Morrison (4-under 66), Maas (3-under 67), sophomore Daniel Bennett (1-under 69) and senior Luke Potter (even-par 70).
No. 1 Auburn earned the top seed in match play with a 54-hole total of 39-under 801 (269-264-268), while No. 4 Florida finished second at 33-under 807 (269-271-267). Texas placed third with a 54-hole score of 30-under 810 (269-269-272), and No. 12 Ole Miss took fourth at 20-under 820 (265-274-281).
Auburn's Jackson Koivun claimed individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 19-under 191 (64-64-63), while Jase Summy of Oklahoma finished as runner-up at 12-under 198 (65-65-68). Maas (66-67-67) placed in a three-way tie for third with Cohen Trollo of Ole Miss (64-70-66) and Alabama's William Jennings (64-66-70) at 10-under 200. Bennett tied for 13th at 6-under 204 (66-69-69), and Morrison tied for 17th at 5-under 205 (71-68-66).
In addition to the Texas-Mississippi State matchup, the match-play quarterfinals will include No. 1 seed Auburn vs. No. 8 seed South Carolina, No. 2 seed Florida vs. No. 7 seed Oklahoma, and No. 4 seed Ole Miss vs. No. 5 seed Texas A&M. The Texas-Mississippi State match is scheduled to start at 7:20 a.m. CT (8:20 a.m. ET) off the 10th tee.
Following the conclusion of the quarterfinals, the match play semifinals will be contested on Saturday afternoon and streamed on SEC Network+. The SEC Championship final is scheduled for Sunday, April 26 (7 a.m. CT/8 a.m. ET) and will be televised by SEC Network.
The Lineup
- Senior Christiaan Maas carded a 3-under 67 on Friday and tied for third in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 10-under 200 (66-67-67). Maas posted a clean card during his final round with three birdies (holes 10, 13 and 14) to go along with 15 pars. This marked the seventh top-eight individual finish for Maas in 11 tournaments this season.
- Senior Tommy Morrison fired a 4-under 66 in his third round and tied for 17th with a three-round score of 5-under 205 (71-68-66). Morrison climbed 20 spots in the individual standings on Friday. He tallied birdies on holes 1, 3, 7 and 11 to climb to 4-under in his final round. After a bogey on 13, he rallied to make a birdie on 15 and finished with three-straight pars to close out his 4-under 66.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett posted a 1-under 69 on Friday and tied for 13th with a 54-hole total of 6-under 204 (66-69-69). Bennett was 2-over through 14 holes in his final round before making three consecutive birdies on holes 15, 16 and 17 and par on 18 to finish at 1-under 69.
- Graduate Matt Comegys recorded a 3-over 73 in his third round and tied for 24th with a three-round score of 4-under 206 (68-65-73).
- Senior Luke Potter registered an even-par 70 on Friday and tied for 41st with a 54-hole total of even-par 210 (69-71-70). After beginning his final round with back-to-back bogeys, he rallied to post three birdies (holes 7, 11 and 17) against just one bogey over his final 16 holes.
