No. 3 Men’s Golf falls to No. 4 Florida in SEC Championship semifinals

The Longhorns top Mississippi State in the quarterfinals before dropping a 3.5-1.5 match to the Gators in the semifinals.
SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team saw its run at the SEC Championship come to an end with a hard-fought 3.5-1.5 loss to No. 4 Florida in the Match Play semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Sea Island Golf Club. The Longhorns, who earned the No. 3 seed in match play following the 54-hole stroke-play portion of the event, posted a 3.5-1.5 victory over No. 6 seed Mississippi State in Saturday morning's quarterfinals before falling to the No. 2 seed Gators in the semifinals in the afternoon session.
During the afternoon semifinal match against No. 4 Florida, Texas received its lone victory from senior Christiaan Maas who tallied a decisive 4&3 win over Luke Poulter. Graduate Matt Comegys earned a half-point for the Longhorns by rallying from a 1-down deficit with one hole to play, as he won the 18th hole and claimed a tie against Matthew Kress.
In the morning quarterfinals against Mississippi State, the Longhorns claimed victories in each of their first three matches to earn a 3.5-1.5 win. Senior Luke Potter was first off the course with a 3&2 victory over Drew Wilson, while Comegys followed with a 4&2 win against Ugo Malcor to give the Longhorns a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Daniel Bennett clinched the quarterfinals victory with a 2&1 win over Jackson Skinner.
Texas will learn the next stop of its postseason schedule during the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Selection Show on Wednesday, May 6.
Florida 3.5, Texas 1.5 (Semifinals)
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett dropped a 3&2 decision to Zack Swanwick. The match was all-square through seven holes, before Swanwick won hole 8 to take a 1-up advantage. Swanwick added wins at hole 13 and 15 to build a 3-up cushion, and the two players halved hole 16 to close out the match.
- Senior Christiaan Maas posted an impressive 4&3 win over Luke Poulter. Maas went 6-under on the front nine and built a 4-up advantage through the opening eight holes. Maas won hole 11 to increase his lead to 5-up, before Poulter responded with a win on hole 13 to trim the margin to 4-down. The players halved the next two holes, and Maas closed out his 4&3 victory.
- Senior Luke Potter dropped a 4&3 decision to Parker Sands. The match was all-square through the opening three holes, before Sands took control with wins on holes 4, 5 and 6 to build a 3-up cushion. Potter won hole 7, but Sands answered with a win on hole 8. The margin remained at 3-up until Sands won hole 13 to increase his advantage to 4-up. Potter won hole 14, but Sands closed out his victory with a win on hole 15.
- Graduate Matt Comegys earned a tie in his match with Matthew Kress. Kress won holes 1 and 3 to build a 2-up advantage, but Comegys answered with wins on holes 7 and 8 to even the match. Kress won hole 13 before Comegys responded with a win on 14 to tie the match. Kress then won hole 15 to go 1-up and held that margin through 17 holes. On the 18th and final hole. Comegys won the hole by making par against a bogey by Kress to square the match. Play was halted at that point, as Florida clinched the overall win.
- Senior Tommy Morrison dropped a 2&1 decision to Jack Turner. Morisson won each of the first two holes with birdies to take a 2-up advantage. The margin remained 2-up in favor of Morrison until Turner won holes 8, 9, 10 and 11 to grab a 2-up lead. Turner added a win on hole 13 to move to 3-up. Morrison won hole 16 with a birdie to close to within 2-down, but both players made par on hole 17 to close out the match.
Texas 3.5, Mississippi State 1.5 (Quarterfinals)
- Senior Luke Potter recorded a 3&2 victory against Drew Wilson. Starting on hole 10, the two players remained all-square through the opening four holes. Potter claimed three-consecutive wins on holes 14, 15 and 16 to build a 3-up lead. Wilson won hole 2 to pull to within 2-down through 11 holes and the players halved the next four holes. Potter made a birdie to win the par-five 7th hole and close out the 3&2 victory.
- Graduate Matt Comegys posted a 4&2 win against Ugo Malcor. Malcor won the opening 10th hole, but Comegys answered with a win on hole 11 to pull even. With the match all-square through five holes, Comegys won hole 15 to take a 1-up advantage. The players halved the next six holes before Comegys earned wins on holes 4 and 5 to build a 3-up cushion. Comegys then made a birdie to win the par-five 7th hole and finish out his 4&2 victory.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett clinched the overall match victory with a 2&1 win over Jackson Skinner. With the match all square through the opening five holes, Bennett won hole 15 to take a 1-up lead. He increased his cushion to 2-up with a win on hole 1 and held that lead until Skinner won hole 5 to trim the lead to 1-down through 14 holes. The players halved the next hole before Bennett made a birdie to win the par-five 7th hole to build a 2-up cushion. Bennett closed out the match by halving hole 8 to finish off his 2&1 victory.
- Senior Christiaan Maas earned a tie with Dain Richie, as play was halted after 15 holes when Texas clinched the overall win. The match was all-square through 9 holes, before Maas took a 1-up lead after winning hole 1. Richie responded by winning hole 2 and followed with a win on hole 5 to grab a 1-up cushion. Maas made a birdie to win the par-three 6th hole to even the match when play was stopped.
- Senior Tommy Morrison dropped his match to Garrett Endicott by a 2-up margin as play was halted after 14 holes when Texas clinched the overall win. Endicott held a 1-up lead through five holes, before Morrison won holes 15 (with an eagle on the par-five) and 16 to take a 1-up advantage. Endicott responded with wins on holes 18, 2, 3 and 4 to build a 3-up lead. Morrison won hole 5 to trim the deficit to 2-down when play was stopped.
