Longhorns launch four home runs in series opener
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 4 Texas raced out to a double-digit lead and never looked back, downing Vanderbilt, 11-4, at Hawkins Field on Friday night.
The Longhorns (31-8, 12-6 SEC) launched four home runs, highlighted by Aiden Robbins' third multi-homer performance in the last seven games.
Robbins left the yard in both the third and fourth innings, driving in three of Texas' first four runs against the Commodores (25-18, 9-10 SEC).
The junior cleared the 35-foot 'Green Monster' in left for a solo shot to open the scoring. One pitch after a safety squeeze in the fourth, Robbins rocketed a 406-foot two-run blast into the seats in left-center. The 6-foot-2, 205-pound outfielder has now smacked a league-best 10 blasts in SEC play and a team-leading 17 home runs on the season.
With the Longhorns in front, 4-0, Texas erupted for five tallies in the fifth, punctuated by Josh Livingston. Livingston smashed a three-run laser over the right-field wall to push the advantage to 9-0.
In the sixth, Adrian Rodriguez capped off the outburst, delivering his first homer of the year. Rodriguez ripped a 413-foot two-run jack to balloon the cushion to 11-0. The sophomore reached safely four times, registering a season-hit three hits and a co-career-best three RBI.
All nine starting position players recorded a knock, as the Longhorns mounted 14 hits across the first six frames.
Dylan Volantis (6-0) set the tone for the visitors, tossing six innings of one-run baseball. Volantis posted 11 strikeouts, finishing one shy of matching his career high. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound southpaw scattered four hits and issued one free pass. He retired 11 of the first 13 batters before yielding his first hit with two outs in the fourth.
Vanderbilt starter Connor Fennell (3-2) was charged with the loss. Fennell was tagged for nine runs on 12 hits over five frames.
The Longhorns will look to secure their first-ever series victory in Nashville on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
