Rubber game slated for noon on Sunday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The fourth-ranked University of Texas baseball team was blanked for the first time this season, falling to Vanderbilt, 6-0, at Hawkins Field on Saturday night.

After the Longhorns (31-9, 12-7 SEC) scored 11 runs in the series opener, the Commodores (26-18, 10-10 SEC) held the visitors to five hits one evening later.

Vanderbilt used three hurlers to combine for 14 strikeouts and even the three-game set.

Luke Guth (2-1) earned the win, tossing 2 1/3 scoreless in relief of Aiden Stillman. Stillman pitched the first 3 2/3 innings and registered six punchouts. Meanwhile, Guth struck out four of the eight batters he faced. Tyler Baird (5) went the rest of the way, securing a nine-out save.

The Commodores tallied five of their six runs in the first three frames, highlighted by a three-spot in the opening inning.

Vanderbilt notched a double, triple and two-run homer across the first five pitches to jump ahead, 3-0.

The Commodores added two more tallies in the third and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.

Texas starter Ruger Riojas (5-2) was tagged with the loss. Riojas allowed five runs on eight hits in three frames.

In the defeat, Thomas Burns pitched a season-long 3 1/3 innings of one-run baseball. Burns registered a season-best five strikeouts.

The Longhorns will look to take the series on Sunday. The rubber game is scheduled for noon at Hawkins Field.
