Longhorns win co-league best sixth SEC series

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sam Cozart registered the final nine outs, as No. 4 Texas outlasted Vanderbilt to post a 4-3 extra-inning win at Hawkins Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the tying tally 90 feet away and the potential winning run in scoring position, Cozart (6-0) fanned the final two batters to secure the series for the Longhorns (32-9, 13-7 SEC).

Temo Becerra worked a bases-loaded free pass to push across the decisive run in the top of the 10^th inning. The Commodores (26-19, 10-11 SEC) issued seven walks in the 3-hour, 50-minute marathon.

Meanwhile, the Longhorns' pitching staff totaled 14 strikeouts, capped off by Cozart's five punchout performance.

Luke Harrison struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits.

Brett Crossland entered with two on and one away in the fifth, stranding the pair with a lineout and a punchout. Crossland added a scoreless sixth before Haiden Leffew tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, setting the stage for Cozart.

At the plate, Ethan Mendoza drove in two of the visitors' first three runs. Mendoza recorded a game-tying single in the fourth before delivering a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Adrian Rodriguez kickstarted Texas' offense, notching an RBI double in the fourth.

Following their co-league best seventh SEC series victory, the Longhorns return home to host Sam Houston on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
