Left-hander retires 21 of final 24 batters faced in co-career-long seven-inning performance
AUSTIN, Texas — Dylan Volantis struck out 11 batters across a co-career-long seven innings to guide No. 6 Texas to a 6-3 win over Missouri at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night.
Volantis (8-1) limited the Tigers (23-28, 6-22 SEC) to just one run on two hits. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound left-hander finished with double-digit punchouts for the fourth time in his last five starts.
After yielding a solo shot to open the contest, Volantis retired 21 of the final 24 batters he faced.
The sophomore recorded his first six outs via strikeout, eclipsing the century mark to end the second inning.
Volantis and Ruger Riojas are the first pair of Longhorns to record 100 punchouts in a single season since Cole Green (104) and Taylor Jungmann (126) accomplished the feat in 2011.
Texas (38-12, 17-10 SEC) backed its ace, mounting five runs in its last four trips to the plate.
With the game tied in the fifth, Ethan Mendoza delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly to put the Longhorns in front, 2-1.
In the sixth, Casey Borba smacked a two-run shot to left to pad the lead, 4-1. Borba's 368-foot blast marked his fourth homer in his last five at-bats. The junior's 32nd career home run vaulted him into a tie for the eighth-most in program history, matching Danny Peoples (1994-96).
Later in the frame, Anthony Pack Jr. notched an RBI single to plate Carson Tinney, who reached on a two-out error.
Tinney would punctuate the offense, launching a 421-foot solo jack in the eighth. The catcher's 18th home run tied him for the ninth-most by a Longhorn in a season, alongside Scott Bryant (1989), Jalin Flores (2024) and Max Belyeu (2024).
Sam Cozart (8) capped off the evening by striking out the side in the ninth. Cozart locked down his seventh save in SEC play on just 14 pitches.
Texas will look to clinch its eighth conference series victory on Friday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
