No. 8 Men’s Golf in fifth after day one at Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational

FORT WORTH, Texas — The No. 8 Texas Men's Golf team carded a two-round total of 3-over 563 (280-283) on Monday to rest in fifth place after the opening day of the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational Presented by Charles Schwab at historic Colonial Country Club. Fifth-year Matt Comegys fired a 36-hole total of 1-under 139 (70-69) and is tied for 10th in the individual standings entering Tuesday's final round.
In Monday's morning round, Texas counted scores from sophomore Adam Villanueva (1-under 69), freshman Sterling Hurd (1-under 69), Comegys (even-par 70) and freshman Brooks Harper (2-over 72) for a team score of even-par 280. During the afternoon round, the Longhorns counted scores from Comegys (1-under 69), junior Daniel Bennett (1-under 69), Villanueva (2-over 72) and Harper (3-over 73) for a team score of 3-over 283.
No. 1 Auburn holds a two-stroke lead in the team standings at 6-under 554 (274-280). No. 11 Alabama (274-282) and No. 14 North Carolina (271-285) are tied for second at 4-under 556, while No. 10 Vanderbilt is fourth at 2-under 558 (279-279). The Longhorns are nine strokes off the lead entering Tuesday's final round. The 16-team field includes seven teams in the top 10 and 14 squads in the top 25 of the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Sept. 25).
There is a four-way tie for the individual lead after the opening 36 holes. Adam Bresnu of Texas Tech (69-67), Auburn's Billy Davis (67-69), Jon Ed Steed of Vanderbilt (68-68) and North Carolina's Niall Sheils Donegan (61-75) each carded two-round totals of 4-under 136 on Monday. Comegys is just three strokes off the lead in a tie for 10th place at 1-under 139 entering Tuesday's final round.
The Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational Presented by Charles Schwab concludes with a final 18 holes on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Texas will be paired with Texas Tech, TCU and Georgia on Tuesday, and tee times will begin at 7:48 a.m. Central from the 1st tee.
The Lineup
- Fifth-year Matt Comegys carded a two-round score of 1-under 139 (70-69) and is tied for 10th in the individual standings. Starting on hole 10, his morning round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-five 3rd hole against a pair of bogeys for his even-par 70. He returned in the afternoon and tallied four birdies (holes 11, 2, 3 and 5) against three bogeys to post a 1-under 69.
- Sophomore Adam Villanueva fired a 36-hole total of 1-over 141 (69-72) and is tied for 13th. Starting on hole 13 in his morning round, Villanueva was 3-over through his opening five holes before running off four straight birdies on holes 18, 1, 2 and 3 to move to 1-under in his round. He closed with two more birdies on holes 6 and 8 against bogeys on holes 4 and 9 to post his 1-under 69.
- Junior Daniel Bennett registered a two-round score of 2-over 142 (73-69) and is tied for 18th. Starting on hole 10 in his afternoon round, Bennett posted three birdies (holes 11, 14 and 2) against a pair of bogeys to record a 1-under 69.
- Freshman Sterling Hurd fired a 36-hole total of 3-over 143 (69-74) and is tied for 27th. Starting on hole 12 in his morning round, Hurd was even-par through his opening seven holes before making an eagle on the par-five 1st hole. He dropped a shot with a bogey on hole 9 but closed out his round with a pair of pars to card a 1-under 69.
- Freshman Brooks Harper recorded a two-round score of 5-over 145 (72-73) and is tied for 44th. In his morning round, Harper posted 16 pars and just two bogeys. He returned in the afternoon and made his lone birdie of the day on hole 7 in his second round.
