• Won three championships at Cal State Fullerton before coming to Texas
• Played collegiate baseball at Fresno State, and earned all-conference honors while leading the Bulldogs to the 1959 College World Series
• One of only seven players to both play and coach in the College World Series
• Began his coaching career in high school in California, and from there went to San Francisco State, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Fullerton, and finally to Illinois where he won two Big Ten championships
• Earned National Coach of the Year honors six times
