- Won gold medals in 400- and 800-meter freestyle events at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics
- Captured U.S. national championships in the 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-meter freestyle events in 1982
- Named Swimming World Magazine[apos]s American Swimmer of the Year in 1983
