- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Former All-America selection Jean-Paul Hebert (JOHN-PAUL A-bear) is into his fourth season as the Assistant Men’s Golf Coach. Prior to this position, Hebert served for three and a half years as the team’s volunteer coach.
Hebert joined the Longhorns in a volunteer capacity in November of 2010. In that role, Hebert assisted in 14 team victories, nine medalist honors, back-to-back Big 12 Championships (2013 & 2014), and the 2012 NCAA Championship at Riviera Country Club. Additionally, he helped coach and develop the talents of five All-Americans in Cody Gribble, Dylan Frittelli, Jordan Spieth, Julio Vegas, and Brandon Stone.
Since coming on board full time on June 1, 2014, Hebert has supported the development of four more All-Americans in Beau Hossler, Scottie Scheffler, Gavin Hall, and Doug Ghim, and has been a part of 18 team victories, three additional Big 12 titles, and a dramatic runner-up finish at the 2016 NCAA’s.
“We’ve been very fortunate to have Jean-Paul on our coaching staff,” head coach John Fields said. “He is an outstanding coach who brings a wealth of knowledge and a valuable perspective to the table. Our collective performance with Men’s Golf at Texas has been immeasurably enhanced with Coach Hebert’s presence.”
A distinguished Texas Ex, Hebert played for Texas from 1991-1994 under head coach Jimmy Clayton. With Justin Leonard as a teammate, Hebert played a major part in leading the Longhorns to four Southwest Conference titles, and a second place finish at the 1994 NCAA Championship his senior year. Individually, Hebert earned All-America honors in three straight seasons (1991-93), and was a four-time All-SWC selection. His 24 top-10 finishes throughout his collegiate career included a win at the 1992 Miami (Florida) National Collegiate, and a T3 finish at the 1993 NCAA Championship. Hebert graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications (1994).
Twice nominated as a finalist for the Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year (2016 & 2017), Coach Hebert’s impact at Texas has not gone unnoticed.
“The opportunity to coach with John Fields has been significant," Hebert said. "So has been the ultimate challenge of success. At Texas, there’s a unique sense of pride about what we stand for and what we can accomplish.”
Born and raised in Houston, Hebert was influenced primarily by his father Jay Hebert (1960 PGA Champion, and 1971 Ryder Cup Captain), as well as his uncle Lionel (1957 PGA Champion), and was molded by dozens of other great players and teachers including Jackie Burke, Dave Marr, and the Harmon family just to name a few.
“The list goes on and on," Hebert said. "I’m truly one of the lucky ones. And much of what I offer to our players has been handed down to me by the teachers in my life.”
Following his collegiate career on the Forty Acres, Hebert competed professionally, and later worked for Golf Channel and CBS as an associate producer for live tournament golf. He is also member of the PGA of America.
