No. 3 Men’s Golf climbs four spots on second day at OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 1-over 281 on Saturday to climb four spots and move into seventh place after the second round of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club. Graduate Matt Comegys fired a 2-under 68 and is tied for fifth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 3-under 137 (69-68).
In Saturday's second round, Texas counted scores from Comegys (2-under 68), senior Christiaan Maas (even-par 70), senior Tommy Morrison (even-par 70) and sophomore Daniel Bennett (3-over 73) to post a team round of 1-over 281.
No. 4 Florida holds a seven-stroke lead in the team standings with a two-round score of 11-under 549 (282-267), while No. 15 Texas Tech is second at 4-under 556 (279-277). No. 1 Oklahoma State is third at 1-under 559 (280-279). The Longhorns are 10 strokes out of third place with a 36-hole total of 9-over 569 (288-281). The 15-team field features 10 squads in the top 20 of the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches preseason poll.
Gaven Lane of Oklahoma State (69-66) and Florida's Matthew Kress (68-67) share the individual lead after 36 holes at 5-under 135. Max Herendeen of Illinois (69-67) and Texas Tech's Connor Graham (69-67) are tied for third at 4-under 136. Comegys is two strokes off the lead in a three-way tie for fifth place at 3-under 137.
The OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational concludes with 18 holes on Sunday, Sept. 21. Texas will be paired with Alabama and Texas A&M in Sunday's final round which will feature a shotgun start with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. Central.
The Lineup
- Graduate Matt Comegys posted a 2-under 68 on Saturday and is tied for fifth in the individual standings with a 36-hole total of 3-under 137 (69-68). Starting his second round on hole 10, Comegys was 2-over through his opening five holes. He responded with five birdies (holes 15, 1, 2, 6 and 8) against just one bogey over his final 13 holes on Saturday.
- Senior Christiaan Maas carded an even-par 70 in his second round and is tied for 42nd at 4-over 144 (74-70). Maas tallied a pair of birdies (holes 13 and 2) against two bogeys on Saturday.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett registered a 3-over 73 on Saturday and is tied for 42nd at 4-over 144 (71-73). Bennett recorded a pair of birdies (holes 11 and 12) in his second round.
- Senior Tommy Morrison posted an even-par 70 in his second round and climbed 14 spots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 62nd at 8-over 148 (78-70). Starting his second round on hole 10, he carded a pair of birdies (holes 11 and 7) against two bogeys on Saturday.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres fired an 8-over 78 on Saturday and is tied for 72nd at 12-over 152 (74-78).
- Competing as an individual, senior Luke Potter carded an even-par 70 on Saturday and is tied for 23rd with a 36-hole total of 1-over 141 (71-70). Starting his second round on hole 10, Potter was 2-over through his opening two holes before posting birdies on holes 13 and 15 along with 14 pars to close out his even-par 70.
