No. 3 Men’s Golf concludes opening round at OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. — The No. 3 Texas Men's Golf team carded an 8-over 288 on Friday to rest in 11th place after the opening round of the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational at Olympia Fields Country Club. Graduate Matt Comegys fired a 1-under 69 and is tied for sixth in the individual standings.
In Friday's opening round, Texas counted scores from Comegys (1-under 69), sophomore Daniel Bennett (1-over 71), senior Christiaan Maas (4-over 74) and sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres (4-over 74) to post a team round of 8-over 288.
No. 15 Texas Tech holds a one-stroke lead in the team standings at 1-under 279, while No. 1 Oklahoma State is second at even-par 280. No. 4 Florida and Loyola Marymount are tied for third at 2-over 282. The Longhorns are nine strokes off the lead after the opening round. The 15-team field features 10 squads in the top 20 of the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches preseason poll.
Adam Bresnu of Texas Tech holds the individual lead after the opening 18 holes at 3-under 67. Bresnu is one stroke in front of a four-way tie for second at 2-under 68 that includes Luke Powell (Alabama), Pongsapak Laopakdee (Arizona State), Aidan Tran (Georgia Tech) and Matthew Kress (Florida). Comegys is just two strokes off the lead in an eight-way tie for sixth at 1-under 69.
The OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational continues with 18 holes on Saturday, Sept. 20 and concludes with 18 holes on Sunday, Sept. 21. Texas will be paired with Georgia Tech and Stanford in Saturday's second round, and tee times will begin at 8:15 a.m. Central from the 10th tee.
The Lineup
- Graduate Matt Comegys fired a 1-under 69 and is tied for sixth in the individual standings. Comegys began his round with 10 consecutive pars before recording an eagle on the par-four 11th and a birdie on 12 to climb to 3-under. He made bogey on holes 14 and 18 to finish at 1-under.
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett carded a 1-over 71 and is tied for 21st. Bennett tallied one birdie (hole 15) against a pair of bogeys in his opening round.
- Senior Christiaan Maas registered a 4-over 74 and is tied for 52nd. Maas recorded a pair of birdies (holes 3 and 11) on Friday.
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres posted a 4-over 74 and is tied for 52nd. He tallied one birdie (hole 1) in his opening round.
- Senior Tommy Morrison fired an 8-over 78 and is in 76th place.
- Competing as an individual, senior Luke Potter carded a 1-over 71 and is tied for 21st. Starting on hole 10, Potter was 2-over through his first 11 holes before making birdie on hole 3 and six-straight pars to close out his 1-over round on Friday.
