Soccer drops season opener to No. 12 Clemson
08.27.2004 | Soccer
AUSTIN, Texas -- Despite Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) firing a game-high seven shots to headline a 20-shot attack for No. 13 Texas (0-1), Paige Ledford's goal with less than four minutes left in the first half proved the difference as the Longhorns dropped their season-opener by a score of 1-0 to No. 12 Clemson (1-0) in front of 1,678 fans at Myers Stadium on Friday, Oct. 27.
Both teams battled for the early momentum with each side gaining numerous scoring chances throughout the first half, but goalkeepers Dana Hall (Kingwood, Texas) for Texas and Ashley Phillips for Clemson kept the game scoreless through 41 minutes of action. Then, in the 42nd minute, Ledford worked a give-and-go with teammate Lindsay Browne from 10 yards out and slipped a shot by Hall to stake the Tigers to a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Texas would again go on the attack in the second period looking for the equalizer, but Phillips again stood tall by making three of her nine saves on the evening in the final half, including a deflection over the crossbar on a point-blank Kelly Wilson (Odessa, Texas) opportunity. While both Wilson and Carpenter each managed a pair of quality shots on goal for UT, the Clemson defense did not crack as they made the one-goal margin stand up over 90 minutes of action. With the Tigers win, Phillips picked up her first collegiate victory as well as shutout while Hall fell to 0-1 on the season.
While all seven of Texas' players coming off the bench each recorded a shot on goal to combine with Wilson and Carpenter's 10-shot tally to help the Horns outshoot the Tigers by a 20-18 margin, Ledford and Browne paved the way for Clemson by producing the lone points on the evening.
Up next, the Horns welcome No. 20 Michigan (0-1) to Myers Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 29 for a 7:30 p.m. match presented by State Farm Life Insurance.
