PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- The University of Texas men's golf finished in a tie for seventh place in their second outing of the fall season, ending with a 22 over-par score of 886 in three rounds at the Prestige held at PGA West Tuesday.
Texas was led by junior Farren Keenan who finished in a tie for 13th place with a three round total of a two over-par 218. He carded rounds of 73, 73, and 73 in the two-day event.
There was a small lightning delay early in round two of the tournament, which starts with back-to-back 18-hole rounds on the first day. The second round was completed Tuesday morning.
Texas finished 26 strokes off the first-place pace of UCLA, who had four of five team members in the top 11 when the scores were all added up and finished with a four-under 860. BYU was second with a six-over 870, followed by Californica-Irvine with an eight-over 872. Illinois was fourth with a total of 875 and Pepperdine and Notre Dame tie for fifth with scores of 880.
"We played well despite our scores," said head coach John Fields. "We need to keep improving to move up the leader board. This was a tough course and our kids really worked hard despite it being a challenging style of golf. We will continue to work and improve with experience."
Sophomore Jace Moore finished tied for 23rd with a five-over par score of 221 after rounds of 73, 74 and 74 for the Longhorns.
Senior Matthew Mills shot a two-over par 74 on the final day and totaled 223 over three rounds to tie for 32nd place. Senior Jeff Bell started strong with rounds of 74 and 73, but shot 79 in round three to total 226 and tie for 44th place. Junior Jhonattan Vegas rounded out the five for Texas with a total of 232 and tie for 72nd finish.
