Stubbs homers twice in 8-6 win over Purdue

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Boilermakers scored five unanswered runs between the sixth and ninth innings to make it a two-run game, but J. Brent Cox (Bay City, Texas) retired the six men he came in to face to preserve an 8-6 victory for No. 1 Texas (20-1) over Purdue (1-7) in front of a crowd of 5,520 at Disch-Falk Field on Saturday, March 12.
Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) connected on his team-leading fifth home run of the year with one out in the bottom of the first to stake the Longhorns to an early 1-0 lead. Purdue looked to answer in the top of the second by placing runners on first and second after consecutive one-out singles from Spencer Ingaldson and Neal Gorka, but Longhorns starter Adrian Alaniz (Sinton, Texas) set down the next two batters he faced to keep UT in front by one. In the bottom of the third, Stubbs connected on his second home run in as many at bats with one runner on to push the Horns on top 3-0. A Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas) double then combined with an error on a dropped pop up to bring in another Texas score with two outs in the third to make it a 4-0 game. One inning later, a David Maroul (Benbrook, Texas) triple and an ensuing groundout to begin the fourth gave UT a 5-0 advantage.
The Boilermakers would cut the Texas lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth when Gorka was hit by a pitch, Eric Wolfe doubled him to third and he scored on a groundout from Eric Osborn. The Longhorns then tacked on three runs to jump on top 8-1 in the fifth via RBI-base hits from Thomas Incaviglia (Monterey, Calif.), Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas) and Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas) after a leadoff double from Teagarden as well as a wild pitch and passed ball on a strikeout factored into the inning. Continuing to battle, the Boilermakers used two singles and a walk with two outs in the top of the sixth to load the bases and then took advantage of an error and a bloop double off the bat of Osborn to plate four runs and cut the UT lead to 8-5. After a scoreless seventh, Purdue continued its rally by bringing in its sixth run of the afternoon when Matt Bush stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored off a Gorka sacrifice fly. While Cox, who came on in the eighth, registered the three outs to close out the top half of the inning, he then returned in the ninth and set the side down in order to preserve the win and earn his team-leading fifth save. Picking up his first college victory was Alaniz, who allowed one earned run on six hits and fanned three Purdue batters over a career-best 5.2 innings of work, while Boilermakers' starter Brent Coudron shouldered the loss.
Pacing the UT offense on the afternoon were five players with multi-hit days, including Peoples, who went 3-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI, Stubbs, who upped his season home run total to a team-best six during a 2-for-5 outing that included two runs scored and three RBI, and Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas), who tallied three hits. Leading the way for Purdue's eight-hit attack, meanwhile, was Gorka, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI, and Osborn, who drove in three scores. Of additional note for Texas, Peoples not only extended his current hit streak to nine games, but with Teagarden and Incaviglia each tallying two-hit efforts, the first five batters in the UT lineup went a combined 12-for-24 (.500) with six runs scored and five RBI.
The Longhorns and Boilermakers conclude this three-game series at Disch-Falk Field on Sunday, March 13 at 1 p.m. Central.
