Arizona hands Baseball first loss of 2005 season

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Freshman Jordon Street (Austin, Texas) threw a career-high five innings of one-hit relief, but five unearned runs during a seven-run second inning by the Wildcats proved the difference as No. 1 Texas (16-1) dropped its first game of the 2005 season by a score of 8-3 to No. 10 Arizona (12-4) in front of a crowd of 1,178 fans at Sancet Stadium on Saturday, March 5.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Jordan Brown came up with a fielder's choice grounder with runners on the corners and one out after a walk and a hit-and-run single by Jeff Van Houten gave Arizona an early threat. Arizona then sent 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the second and took advantage of two Longhorns errors in the frame with eight hits, including seven singles, and a walk to bring in seven runs and break on top 8-0. Highlighting that frame were a two-run single by Jacob Brown and RBI-hits from Trevor Crowe, Bill Rhinehart, Jason Donald and Chris Frey. Meanwhile, Texas' offense had been limited to only one hit over the first three innings by Arizona starter Kevin Guyette.
In the top of the fourth, the Horns used a pair of two-out singles from Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas) and Thomas Incaviglia (Monterey, Calif.) sandwiched around an error after a one-out hit from Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas) to plate a pair of scores to make it an 8-2 game. After a scoreless fifth for both sides, the game moved to the top of the sixth when with one out, the rain moved in and the game was delayed for 32 minutes. Following the delay, UT received a walk to Teagarden and a RBI-single from Incaviglia to score Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas), who had singled with one out before the rains set in, to pull within five at 8-3. While the Longhorns then put their leadoff runner on in both the seventh and eighth and had Jordon Street retire 10 in a row over his five frames of work, it was not enough as Arizona reliever Sean Jarrett kept the Horns' offense in check with three shutout innings of his own to cap off the five-run victory for the Wildcats. Guyette, who fanned five over six innings of work, picked up his third victory of the year, while Jarrett earned his first save and UT starter Kyle McCulloch (Houston, Texas) shouldered the loss.
Headlining the Texas offense on the day was Incaviglia, who collected three of the Horns seven hits with a 3-for-4 effort that included a RBI, and Teagarden, who went 1-for-3 while scoring one run and driving in another. Arizona, meanwhile, had its 11-hit attack paced by Brad Boyer, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Brown, who drove in three runs, and the duo of Donald and Frey, who each turned in a 2-for-4 outing.
Texas and Arizona conclude this three-game series at Sancet Stadium on Sunday, March 6 at 1 p.m. Central.
