No. 1 Baseball drops 7-2 contest to No. 14 Missouri

AUSTIN, Texas -- A pair of three-run innings proved the difference as No. 1 Texas (36-9, 12-7 Big 12) lost a 7-2 decision to No. 14 Missouri (31-12, 11-6 Big 12) in front of a crowd of 5,582 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Saturday, April 30. Notably, the win for the Tigers evens the series between these two clubs at one game apiece.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second when a one-out walk and an infield hit were followed by RBI-base hits from Derek Chambers and Gary Arndt in front a walk to load the bases and a hit batter that brought in the third run of the inning. Texas quickly answered in the bottom of the frame as Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas) came up with an infield single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came around to score on a base hit off the bat of David Maroul (Benbrook, Texas) to make it a 3-1 game. A wild pitch in between back-to-back singles from Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas) and Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) in the third then pulled the Horns within a run at 3-2.
In the fifth, a leadoff infield single from center fielder Hunter Mense yielded a 4-2 lead for the Tigers as Mense stole second and scored on a RBI-hit off the bat of Jacob Priday. The Longhorns would look to tie the game in the sixth by placing runners at second and third with one down via consecutive singles and a passed ball, but MU starter Nathan Culp and reliever Andrew Johnston recorded back-to-back strikeouts to work out of the jam and keep Mizzou on top. Following a scoreless seventh for both sides, the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth on a double, an infield single and a walk before an error and a two-run single from Priday plated three unearned scores and established a 7-2 Missouri advantage. Although the Horns managed to put runners on in each of the next two frames, they could not cut into the MU lead as Johnston, who allowed only two hits over 3.1 innings, worked a scoreless eighth and ninth to earn his third save while preserving the win. While Culp notched his seventh win of the year by allowing only two runs on nine hits and striking out five over 5.2 innings, Texas starter Adrian Alaniz (Sinton, Texas) shouldered the loss despite a five-inning, five-strikeout effort.
Paving the way for UT offensively were Maroul, who tallied a career-best three hits while also driving in one run, Stubbs, who extended his current hit streak to 12 games with a 2-for-5 outing that included a RBI, and the duo of Kainer and Taylor Teagarden (Carrollton, Texas), who each collected a pair of hits. Missouri, meanwhile, had its 12-hit offensive attack led by Priday, who went 2-for-5 with three RBI, Arndt, who scored one run and drove in another during a 3-for-4 day, and the tandem of Trevor Helms and Zane Taylor, who each posted multi-hit efforts with two hits apiece. Of additional note for Texas, Seth Johnston (Boerne, Texas) upped his present hit streak to nine games with a fifth-inning single.
The final game of this three-game conference series at Disch-Falk Field is set for 1 p.m. Central on Sunday, May 1.
