No. 7 Baseball sweeps Kansas with 11-1 victory in eight innings

AUSTIN, Texas -- The UT offense scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth with two outs and Adrian Alaniz struck out six over 6.2 innings as No. 7 Texas recorded an 11-1 victory in eight innings over Kansas in front of 5,174 fans at Disch-Falk Field on Sunday, May 7.
With the Longhorns' (36-15, 19-4 Big 12) third straight win over the Jayhawks (33-21, 10-14 Big 12), Texas not only upped its winning streak to a season-best eight games, but also earned its fifth league series sweep of the year to set a school record for sweeps during Big 12 play. Additionally, UT's run-rule victory gave the Horns 19 wins in Big 12 action, which ties the school record for Big 12 Conference triumphs in one season.
A leadoff double by Brock Simpson followed by a bloop single from Ritchie Price and a sac fly off the bat of Matt Baty staked KU to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Texas answered in the bottom of the frame as Carson Kainer (Tomball, Texas) doubled after two walks to drive in one run and Hunter Harris (Tulsa, Okla.) dropped a safety squeeze bunt to establish a 2-1 UT advantage. One inning later, the Horns upped their lead to 3-1 as Kyle Russell (Tomball, Texas) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice, stole third and scored on a two-out wild pitch. After a scoreless third for both clubs, UT had two runners on with two outs in the fourth before Nick Peoples (Round Rock, Texas) doubled into the left-field corner to plate two runs and then scored himself on an infield error to push Texas in front 6-1. Continuing to extend the fourth inning, Drew Stubbs (Atlanta, Texas) delivered a RBI-triple in front of consecutive run-scoring doubles from Kainer, Harris and Bradley Suttle (Boerne, Texas) to make it a 10-1 game.
Alaniz (Sinton, Texas), meanwhile, allowed only one hit to the Jayhawks between the second and fifth innings to maintain the nine-run lead. While KU would receive a double from pinch-hitter Ross Kelling to begin the seventh, Alaniz fanned his next two batters and reliever Kyle Walker (The Woodlands, Texas) came on to retire the first hitter he faced on a fly ball to center field. In the bottom of the eighth, back-to-back singles by Chance Wheeless (Round Rock, Texas) and Stubbs to open the frame were followed by a throwing error on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Kainer to score Stubbs and invoke the conference's 10-run rule to seal the series sweep. While Alaniz, who allowed only one run on five hits, walked none and fanned six, picked up his sixth win of the season, KU starter Kodiak Quick incurred the loss.
Headlining Texas' 10-hit offense were Stubbs, who went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI, Peoples, who scored twice and drove in two runs during a two-hit effort, and the duo of Kainer and Suttle, who each went 2-for-4 while combining for one run scored and three RBI. On the other side of the ledger, Kansas was led offensively by Simpson, who went 1-for-4 with one run scored, and the tandem of Jared Schweitzer and Kelling, who each posted hits on the afternoon. Of additional note for UT, Kainer and Peoples each extended their current hit streaks to eight games apiece, while Wheeless has now hit safely in each of the last six contests.
