Baseball prevails over alumni, 9-6

ROUND ROCK, Texas -- Keyed by a six-run ninth inning rally, The University of Texas posted a 9-6 win over UT Alumni in the UT Baseball Alumni Game Saturday afternoon at The Dell Diamond.
Trailing 5-3 in the top of the ninth inning, Nick Peoples started the surge by getting hit by a pitch. With one out, Clint Stubbs singled through the left side of the infield and Clay Van Hook drew a walk to load the bases. Todd Gilfillan put the Longhorns ahead 7-5 as he delivered a two-run single to left field and the bases cleared on a three-base fielding error by Baltimore Oriole Brandon Fahey on the play. Brett Lewis continued the rally with a double down the left-field line, Jeff Boes walked and the pair moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Pat McCrory laced a two-run single to centerfield, inflating the cushion to 9-5.
The Alumni drew first blood in the bottom of the fourth inning as Curtis Thigpen and Dustin Majewski, both in the Toronto Blue Jays' farm system, delivered back-to-back solo home runs to lead off the frame. Thigpen delivered his shot to left field, while Majewski deposited his home run in right field.
Texas bounced back with a pair of runs in the top of sixth inning as Kyle Russell hit a lead-off infield single and Bradley Suttle hit a two-run home run down the leftfield line.
The Alumni regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth. Majewski singled to left field and Ryan Hubele of the Baltimore Orioles' organization singled through the right side. Seth Johnston, a San Diego Padres' farmhand doubled down the left-field line, plating Majewski and staking the Alumni to a 3-2 lead. J.D. Reininger singled through the left side, scoring Hubele and a sacrifice fly by David Maroul of the San Francisco Giants' farm system pushed Johnston across and increased the margin to 5-2.
Texas trimmed the lead to 5-3 in the top of the eighth with a singles by Gilfillan and Jeff Boes putting runners at the corners. McCrory hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Gilfillan.
Reininger hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to complete the scoring.
Gilfillan went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Preston Clark went 2-for-3 and McCrory was 1-for-1 with three RBI.
Starter Randy Boone pitched three scoreless innings for Texas, yielding three hits and inducing a pair of double plays. James Russell picked up the win in relief as he pitched two scoreless innings, fanning a pair.
Johnston led the Alumni with three hits, one run and one RBI. Reininger and Majewski each had a pair of hits.
Texas returns to action on Friday, Feb. 2 as the open the season with a 3 p.m. game vs. the University of San Diego at The Dell Diamond.
