Baseball falls to Long Beach State in 10 innings

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- For the second consecutive night, The University of Texas baseball team lost on a walk-off hit, dropping a 9-8 decision to Long Beach State University at Blair Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the scored tied 8-8 in the bottom of the 10th inning, the 49ers' Danny Espinosa hit a one-out double to centerfield. Shane Peterson drew an intentional walk, leading to Brian Capon's walk-off RBI single to centerfield.
Texas (2-4) was leading 8-5 before LBSU scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to send the contest to extra innings. In the fifth inning, the Dirtbags scored on a balk by UT pitcher Austin Wood. In the sixth, Jason Corder hit his second home run of the game over the leftfield fence. In the seventh, Robert Perry hit an RBI single to score Jason Tweedy.
Texas pounced on the 49ers early for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Nick Peoples led off the game by being hit by a pitch. He stole second base and scored on a double down the rightfield line by Jordan Danks. With two outs, Chance Wheeless plated Danks from third with a double to the right centerfield gap, staking the Longhorns to a 2-0 lead.
The Longhorns added four more runs in the top of the second with a two-run triple by Peoples, a sacrifice fly by Danks and an RBI double by Bradley Suttle, inflating the Texas cushion to 6-0.
Texas tacked on another run in the third inning as Michael Demperio reached third base on a throwing error on a bunt and scored on an RBI single by Peoples for a 7-0 advantage.
Long Beach State (4-1) broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the third as Corder hit a solo home run to leadoff the frame. The 49ers would add four more runs with the help of a bases-loaded walk by Tweedy, a two-run double by Steve Tinoco and a sacrifice fly by Perry, trimming the lead to 7-5.
Texas took an 8-5 lead in the fourth inning as Wheeless led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by McCrory, advanced to third on a groundout by Kyle Russell and scored on an infield single by Travis Tucker.
Randy Boone (0-2) was saddled with the loss despite pitching well in relief. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
Bryan Shaw (1-0) earned the win for Long Beach State. He pitched three innings over one-hit, shutout ball, walking three and striking out five.
Texas' 1-through-5 hitters combined to go 13-for-27 at the plate, with Peoples, Danks and Wheeless each logging three hits.
Tinoco led Long Beach State at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI. Corder was 2-for-5 with two solo home runs.
The two squads wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
