AUSTIN, Texas -- Five University of Texas pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Longhorns posted a 7-1 win over Winthrop University in collegiate baseball action Wednesday evening at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Kyle Walker, Pat McCrory, Keith Shinaberry, Joseph Krebs and Randy Boone combined to allow just one run on three hits and two walks. Walker (1-0) pitched three innings, allowing one run on two hits and two walks. McCrory retired six batters on 10 pitches over two innings. Shinaberry allowed a hit, but the Longhorns turned a double play as he faced just six batters on 16 pitches over his two innings. Krebs and Boone pitched one hitless shutout inning apiece.
The Longhorns pounced on the Eagles early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter Travis Tucker drew a walk, stole second and moved to second on a single by Jordan Danks. Bradley Suttle drew a walk to load the bases and with two outs, Russell Moldenhauer plated two runners with a single through the right side of the infield. Josh Prince followed with a single through the left side to score Suttle and stake Texas to a 3-0 lead.
Winthrop (11-10) shaved one run off the lead with a run in the third inning. Tommy Lentz drew a walk and John Murrian singled to start the frame. With one out, Chris Carrara walked to load the bases. Bryn Henderson hit a fly ball which sent UT's Nick Peoples deep to centerfield. Peoples stumbled to the turf when camping under the ball, but he was able to get back on his feet to make the catch retiring Henderson who had to settle for the sacrifice fly.
Texas (16-7) tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Tucker once again led off with a walk and moved to second on sacrifice bunt. Danks plated Tucker with a single up the middle and Suttle followed with a two-run home run, inflating the UT cushion to 6-1.
The Longhorns added an insurance run in the eighth. Prince hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a balk and advanced to third on a groundout by Preston Clark. Peoples pushed Prince across with a groundout to third base for the final run of the game.
Tucker, Danks and Prince had two hits apiece for the Longhorns. Moldenhauer and Suttle both had two RBI.
Alex Wilson (0-2) was saddled with the loss for Winthrop. He allowed six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four over five innings.
Texas opens up Big 12 Conference play on Friday with the Longhorns hosting Baylor in a 2 p.m. contest at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
