Pfenninger sets UT career wins record in 6-0 victory over UTSA

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas junior goalkeeper Dianna Pfenninger set the UT school record with her 29th career win as the sixth-ranked Texas Longhorns shut-out UT-San Antonio, 6-0, in front of the largest crowd of the 2007 season (1,182 fans) on Friday, Sept. 14 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Texas wins its fourth match in five games to open the 2007 season (4-1-0). With the win, UT equals the 1999 team for the best five-game opening start.
The shut out is the second of the year for the Roadrunners as UTSA drops to 1-4-1.
Pfenninger (Sugar Land, Texas) now holds a career record of 29-12-3 since her first match on Sept. 25, 2005. In her record-setting victory over UTSA, Pfenninger registered one save in 83 minutes, 25 seconds of action and moves to 4-1-0 on the season.
NSCAA All-American senior Kelsey Carpenter (Allen, Texas) had her second multi-goal game of the year while University of Houston transfer and Texas junior midfielder Courtney Gaines (Sugar Land, Texas) assisted three goals for her first multi-point match on the Forty Acres.
Fellow All-American Kasey Moore (Mission Viejo, Calif.) netted the game's only goal of the opening period as the junior defender headed the ball in the net off a corner kick from Gaines. Moore found the back of the net, for her third goal of the year, just 16 minutes, six seconds into the home contest.
After managing 23 shots and one goal in the first 45 minutes of action, the Longhorns offense came out of the locker room on fire, as UT scored three of its second-half goals within the first nine minutes of the second period.
Carpenter connected on her first goal of the night from a pass that originated with a defensive stop by Pfenninger in goal. For the second consecutive scoring drive, Gaines touched the ball to Carpenter for the score at 50 minutes, 18 seconds.
Less than a minute later, Houston native and Texas freshman forward Nikki Arlitt extended the UT lead to 3-0 with her second career score, putting the ball between the posts at 51:10.
Gaines and Arlitt combined to set up Carpenter's second goal and UT's third in a three-minute span at the 53:01.
Freshman Brooke Lee (Mesquite, Texas) and Austin native and sophomore forward Emily Anderson capped off the team-scoring efforts with late-match goals at 75:09 and 81:31, respectively.
Texas out-shot the Roadrunners, 41-5, as UT neared the school record of 46 shots in a match set last season in a 7-0 win over Sam Houston State (Oct. 13). The Longhorns also held the advantage in corner kicks (11-3). UTSA tallied two more fouls than Texas (8-6).
UTSA junior goalkeeper Rachel Francis played 53:04, collecting nine saves and allowing four goals. Sophomore Kasi Hebert, who entered the game for the remaining 36:56, was charged with two goals against four saves.
Texas continues a six-match home stretch with mid-week game against SEC foe LSU on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. CT at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

On becoming UT's career wins record holder: It's definitely an honor. I had no idea I was close to the school record. I don't keep track of wins and losses, I just work my hardest every game. I think it's a testament to the teams that we've had over the past few years, and I'm hoping that we'll continue to have a great season and come out with even more wins.
I had no idea what to expect coming in, especially as a freshman. You just work as hard as you can, do your best everyday at practice, and come out for the games and hopefully make an impression. It is kind of crazy to think that I still have another season after this one. I'm just taking it game-by-game and just cherishing it for what it is.

On the offensive burst to start of the second half: After scoring five goals in the second half, I think we are definitely a second half team. We've proven it once again but I don't think that is necessarily a good thing. We need to improve on that. [UT head coach] Chris [Petrucelli] said we needed to have a spark in the second half. All it took was one person to get it started, and luckily I had the opportunity. After I scored that first goal it was a domino effect and everyone followed suit.
