Soccer suffers first loss of the season at Nebraska, 2-1

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, dropping a 2-1 contest at Nebraska, Friday evening. The Longhorns move to 7-1-2 (0-1-1 Big 12) while the Cornhuskers improve to 7-4-1 and 3-0-0 in conference play.
Texas got off to a quick offensive start with freshman Courtney Goodson firing two shots in the first seven minutes, but it was Nebraska would who would find the back of the net first in the 18th minute. Sophomore midfielder Anna White connected on Anna Caniglia's corner kick to give NU the 1-0 advantage.
The Longhorns weren't down long after senior Kasey Moore netted the equalizer in the 33rd minute. Senior Courtney Gaines chipped the ball over the head of NU's Aysha Jamani to Moore who was able to head it past Husker keeper Brianna Pfeil into the right corner of the net. The goal was the defender's fourth of the year.
Nebraska picked up the offensive pressure on the Texas backline early in the second half and connected on its second goal in the 58th minute for a 2-1 lead. Caniglia played a short corner kick to Jamani who sent a long cross to the far post past the hands of keeper Dianna Pfenninger for the game winner.
The Longhorns appeared to have evened up the score in the 87th minute but were called offsides. With the loss, Nebraska pulled even in the all-time series (9-9-0) and snapped UT'S five-match winning streak against the Huskers.
Texas continues Big 12 play hosting Iowa State on Sunday. The match is set for a Noon Central start at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
